how long till the 7800gtx 256mb hits $300

never, it will be out of production by then but you will be able to buy a used one for that sometime in the future I can assure you :p

The 6800GT never hit $200 flat no rebates did it? It was out of production by then AFAIK.

But obviously...6800GS replaced it for less than $200 :p.

Yeah, I would say atleast 3 months, maybe 4 before we see a $300 range GTX. Of course this is just IMO.

I think even that's being generous, unless ATI comes out with an X1900XL that soundly beats it for ~$400. Barring that, I'd say closer to the end of the year before you can get a 7800GTX or X1800XT for ~$300 (new; refurbs/used ones will be at that price sooner, obviously).

Assuming the top-end G71 *is* actually significantly faster than the 7800GTX512MB, it will also probably debut at $600+ (given recent pricing trends). That kind of pricing will not exert much downwards pressure on the cheaper cards.
