I got my wisdom teeth out last friday, and no major problems so far. I smoke pipe tobacco every now and then because it helps relax me, and how long should I wait till I can smoke again?

Cancer12, after having 3 of my wisdon teeth pulled out recently, I'd say wait till the area stops bleeding, worked for me.

My, what an appropriate screen name/avatar; it fits your question and self-destructive lifestyle very well.

Now that I'm done preaching...when you get your wisdom teeth removed, the biggest fear/worst thing is "dry socket."

The primary causes of dry socket are:

1. Creating any kind of oral vacuum (i.e. drinking thru a straw or smoking a cigarette/pipe.)
2. Bacterial infection

Your addiction will compel you to shoot up no less than 24 hours after the surgery.

The wounds (gaping holes, actually) left from removing all four teeth will take approximately 6 weeks to close.

Go ahead and light up now; you'll never make it that long.

For the record, I do not smoke. I had all four wisdom teeth removed at once. My bottom jaw (BOTH sides) got dry socket (infected) because the dentist did not pack the cloth strips with the medicine (I forget the proper technical term...) into the holes well enough. Got food in there. It rotted. I had big fun for two months.

Good luck, Nicotene Addiction Poster Child. ;)

*edit*

If you're telling the truth, you havne't smoked in 5 days. That is VERY GOOD. :) If you have lasted this long (assuming you're being honest) you can quit entirely!!! A true nicotine fiend can't go more than 24 hours w/o a fix. Just quit now!!!! After all; it's just nicotine, not sex, for chrissakes!

jeez your harsh. If you read my post I got them out last friday, which is a little more than 24 hours. I am no way addicted but I enjoy a bowl with my pipe when I am stressed out. (tobacco) I occasionally go weeks without smoking.

I can assume you've already done the post-checkup? If not, ask the doctor. If so, call the doctor up and ask :)

Total heal time is supposed to be 6-9 months...:(

I was smoking a few hours after having mine out. I just packed moist wads of gauze over the gaping holes in my skull and bit down on the gauze while puffing/smoking.

Where there's a will...

LOL
You and MichaelD obviously know fvck-all about pipe smoking. I've been piping for nearly 3 year now, and believe you me, the only addictions most of us pipesters have is collecting more pipes and collecting more tobaccos. If you've ever done any significant amount of pipe smoking you'd realize that if you do it looking for a nicotine "fix" you're in the wrong place. Even my strongest tobacco on hand (Dunhill My Mixture 965) only gives me a buzz if I smoke it like a madman. There's just not enough being absorbed that way.

When I got my dental implant installed, I also wondered how long I should wait before I should pick up another pipe. I actually gave it a couple months. Fact is that smoking slows the healing process down, and can also promote infection along with dry socket as MichaelD already mentioned. It just ain't worth it. The great thing about pipes is that they don't get stale or disappear if you stop using them for awhile :)

Actually . . . many years ago I smoked a pipe in Ireland. I was having a bit of fun with the guy; on one hand he says he can go for weeks without smoking - on the other he is anxious to get back to smoking "to relax" while his mouth is still healing.

Still, no matter how you look at it, it is an unhealthy habit. If you are getting a "buzz" from your pipe, you are inhaling - at least the 2nd hand smoke (which is decidedly unhealthy).

I'd still say, give it 20 years. ;)

Hehe
That is pretty humorous. I didn't pick up on that.

You also pick up nicotine through your mouth and throat, just not that much. No doubt that it's not healthy, though.

This is more of a question, than it is a concern, but are there any sort of corrosive properties in the smoke that you inhale that could dissolve or weaken the blood clots, and inhibit the healing process?
