How does Google make money from Youtube? There are no ads, no subscription fees, etc.

I think its more for brand recognition. So their is no concrete income to go by.

I don't know what google is thinking. They're just throwing money away. I smell a dot com bubble burst when google starts losing money due to increased competition.

There will be ads. Don't forget that is how google made most of their fortune. They didn't buy youtube for name recognition. It will also be a very unfortunate day when these ads show up in our videos.

There are going to be ad overlays on the videos coming soon.

Still, I don't think Google is ever going to see YouTube turn a profit. The content on YouTube is getting less interesting, not more. Now that Viacom and the like are getting much faster with having copyrighted materials yanked, there's not much to see on YouTube other than whining emo kids doing video blogs. :p

IMO, Youtube alone will not directly create a profit for them. Look at the online advertising market they've grabbed - Microsoft has been spending hordes of money trying to do the same, and in the end, they are still only able to conquer a small portion of it, Google is the major controller.

Something like this has power to shape the future of media and having the ownership of a site like this in your company's portfolio is worth much more than what it cost because of the future they see with it.

Page views and reach are still increasing at a steady pace. Who cares if they're able to make it work by getting emo video blogs? The fact is that they're making it work and they're growing at a steady pace, and that's what matters.

Plus not only with ADs, google is making money. But with direct sponsors. Such as ABC news, Samsung video contests, Smiroff contest, etc.

Google is implementing adsense right now for Youtube for open publishers.
