How long should I expect this CPU \ MOBO last?

I was wondering I have the e8400 on a GA-P35-DS3L running at 3.753 at 1.35v
The temps stay below 65ºc and have the motherboard set to turn off at 70ºc
It is always running folding @ Home with both cores at a 100% 24/7



I need the computer to last 2 - 3 years, will it at this rate ?

Oh all on the stock cooler

Ps. yes I do regret not getting the Q6600 :| because 2.4GHz on 4 cores sounds better then 3.75 on 2

2.4 x 4 = 9.6

how can you overclock the e8400 and not the q6600??

oh..by the way, i am sure it will last 2-3 years if not 5-10 year like that

Seems like your voltage is semi-high compared to others...im 143mhz less that you and my voltage is only 1.248 idle (1.275 value in BIOS)



And also, a 3.7 dual smokes a 2.4 quad for most users. It smokes a 3.0 quad for most users. And ill laugh if you tell me you play supcom.

the problem is its running OS X86 as its main OS so when I do any OCing i have to boot into windows

Ill have to check tomorrow morning as what the real voltage is

change your shutoff alarm to 75c, that's still 20c detla to tjunction right? that's not too shabby @ nearly 4ghz on the stock cooler imho.

if i put it at 75 i should be able to get the 40mhz to hit 4 ghz

Overclockers forum state that CPUs have typical lifespan of 30,000 hours. That should be about 3.4 years if run 24/7.
The lifespan is directly related to heat.

you would have to try VERY hard to blow up most cpus at stock speeds in 3.4 years even running f@h 24/7. as in boost the s**t out of vcore or cpu vtt while you were running @ stock. I'm not saying that this doesn't happen SOME of the time, but the ONLY person I've seen destroy a modern cpu was aigomorla when he deliberately took out a 45nm e8xx cpu a couple months ago on his "torture rack". As long as you stay 20+c below tjmax and keep the voltages in check your cpu will almost definitely last you until it's obsoleet...kind of like my tbird 1.2 ghz that was still going strong until a few months ago. I retired it b/c mom needed an A xp 2500+ to surf the internet

Definitely. Intel's new dualies rock the house. Don't swap that thing out for a quad unless someone hands you one for free.

For f@h, you would have gotten better stats and performance from a quad than your dual core.....but for gaming, they say the 8xxx series is the better choice.

Personally, I'll keep my Q6600 which is running at 3.6GHz @ 1.35V, and has been able to hit 3.9GHz, but with voltages I'm just not comfortable running 24/7....like 1.55V or so.

There sure is, but the cpu is locked at 9x max isn't it? so it can't do 9.5x if so then what would be the point of the E8500? Cause you could just buy the E8400 and put it at 9.5x. It's not possible sry.

I wonder if it's possible that the option is selectable in bios, but just doesn't really do anything on a lock chip? Have you actually verified your OC with CPUz or something?

Also, take note that the article you linked is 9 years old. I remember that back then, there were a lot of arguments about whether your chip would last longer if you powered down every night or not (thermal cycling vs total use time). I'm sure they bring up a lot of valid points, but its pretty hard to put a number on the life expectancy. As others have said, it is my experience that stock chips last practically forever and of the few people who overclock, it would still be difficult to gather enough data to determine an accurate life expectancy. I think its safe to say with modern chips that most will probably last longer than you think as long as you stay within temperature and voltage range.

yeah, my ip35 pro does the same thing. I read an older post about somebody getting 8.5 out of his q9450, but he couldn't get any software to "verify" higher than 8x. I was curious so I tried to change my multi in bios. Sure enough, it let me change it to 8.5. However, I didn't change ANY of my voltages and the computer booted up just fine and started crunching away on seti like it was nothing. Now, I'm pretty excited about my cpu, but I don't think that it would be 100% stable with my current voltages at 3.825 ghz. Also, the post screen, cpu-z, coretemp, realtemp, etc all still showed an 8x multi. Too bad...
