How long should a basic car inspection take?

I'm about to finalize terms on buying a used Subaru Outback (1997). I know that it is a good idea to bring the car into a mechanic to take a look at, so before I hand the money over, I'm planning on bringing it into a Subaru Dealership and having them look it over. I've driven the car and looked at the Carfax records on it, and it seems to be in really good shape - so I'm pretty sure I don't need the mechanic to go over it with a fine-tooth comb. However, I do want to know that the car isn't mechanically defective...

The person selling the car has all the mechanical records, and has done all the oil changes himself. The mechanical records show me that he has recently had the belts changed, the undercarriage sealed, and the alternator replaced (the old alternator was replaced due to a recall). I feel very confident about the condition of the car, but still...

So anyway, with all that in mind, how long should I set aside (and how much $$$) for an inspection of the car before I pick it up? Half hour? Hour?

The newer the car, the less time it takes, almost indefinitely... depends on what has been done before the "final" inspection..

In all honesty, depending on what they want to do, if they are just CHECKING and not fixing anything, it should take 10-15 mins.

I hope that is what you are looking for, I am not sure quite sure of exactly what is checked, but alot of stuff can be checked by a poke/touch and visual inspection.

Good to hear. :) I'm hoping that it will take an insignificant amount of time, so I can get the deal done with and get on the road. If we were living in a perfect world, I wouldn't even bother...but even with the gut feeling I get buying from this family (a good gut feeling, btw), I still have to double-check, to be on the rational side. :)
