The backlight typically lasts 50,000 hours (17yrs@8 hrs/day) until it starts degrading. Five years of good quality is a nice solid number, but there will definitely be some that last ten or more.

Edit: sorry, the backlight will be at half brightness at 50,000 hours. So maybe 25,000 hours of good quality (8.5yrs@8 hrs/day).

I'm not sure, but the transistors that drive them can go bad (causing a bad row or column of pixels). Dead pixels may just be one malfunctioning crystal.
