I went to an optometrist about 3 weeks ago concerning my really red eyes. It was then that I found out I had a viral form of pink eye that takes 2-3 weeks to go away (according to my optometrist).

Well... it hasn't gone away yet, and for a while it seemed to lighten up. But last night my left eye got all itchy and red again. What the heck is going on?? Should I go back to the optometrist? or is it supposed to last this long?

Go to the doctor, your eyes are not something to screw around with.

They'll likely take cultures of it & may give you antibiotic drops (I had a corneal ulcer + infection, they gave me ocuflox).

My son had it a year ago. He was given an rx for a new type of eye drop. He only had to take the drops for a couple days. It worked really well. The older drops had to be taken for at least a week, might have been ten days... Sucks when you have a little kid, the stuff seems to burn.

You should see a real doctor.

The burning eye drops were the best part! When in doubt go see your doctor again. You don't want to mess around with your eyes. Being blind is no fun.

If they diagnosed it as viral, they won't be giving him any antibiotics....

The viral form of pink eye is WAY wussy compared to the bacterial (conjunctivitis). I've had both. The viral one went away in a few weeks with no medicine (would have gone away faster but I continued to wear my contacts). Conjunctivits hurt me SO bad, I literally couldn't open my eyes for 2 days because the burning was so fierce! Ah...that sucked. You don't need eye drops for the viral, but you definintely do for bacterial. If they give you eye drops for the viral, it's just to allievate some of the symptoms.

yeah... they said last time that they couldn't give me eyedrops cause it was viral. bummer there isn't anything to make it go away faster.

it seemed to go away last week... there were days when my eyes were not red at all. Now it got pretty red this morning.

made an appointment for tomorrow.
I don't know what good it will do... they'll probably just say the same thing they did last time.

Till you die - then it goes away in about 24 hours

I had the bacterial form last year. I went to the doctor and he gave me sulfa drops. My eyes got REALLY red so I went back to the doctor, and he was like OMG, he was calling all his medical students in to the room to look at my eyes because he had never seen them that red. Said I was probably allergic to the sulfa drops. So they put me on some other drops which burned like a bastard but got rid of them (both eyes, doh!) in a few (more) days.
So you may be allergic to the drops.

Should be gone within like 2 weeks max.

Otherwise your eyes will fall out and shrivel into dust before your feet.
j/k

First part is true though.
