How long is it going to be before someone gets killed in the NHL?

Roenick took two pucks in the face this year, Yzerman just took one, hitting from behind is rampant, and it's not uncommon to take a two-hander in the head.

Just seems like a matter of time until there's a fatality.

That's what face shields are for... also, they are professionals. They know what they are doing.

The worst injury was when the Sabres goalie Malarchuk got a skate to his throat. He bled all over the ice and everyone looked on in stunned silence.

He did make it though, and injuries can't get worse then that (life threatening). Football and baseball have more on field deaths.

Quite bizarre that baseball has more onfield deaths, considering hockey is far more physically demanding, on the body as a whole. Maybe it's b/c hockey players are in better shape.

to me, the most ridiculous part of hockey is how fighting is part of it, and just results in a penalty. unless the sport is boxing, I think that is ridiculous. i hate hockey and probably will never like it.

Stop being so self-righteous. Fighting has ALWAYS been a part of hockey. If you've never played, you probably dont understand why people fight in hockey.

OP, pucks to the face aren't life threatening although painful and devistating. Face shields are there to prevent this exact thing, they choose not to wear shields. Originally, they didnt even wear helmets in the NHL.

I've never seen any 'two handers to the head' if you're referring to someone taking their stick and going baseball style or from above.

I know its part of hockey. i never said it wasnt. i just said its ridiculous that it is part of hockey. football is just as physical as hockey if not more, and you don't see them throwing off their equipment and start fighting.

Uneducated and ignorant.

In short, fighting is a part of hockey because players skate around at full speed with sticks in their hands. It's a contact sport. What do you do if you get pissed after someone hits you (legally or not)... do you go after them with your fists or do you swing your stick because fighting would get you kicked out ? That's a part of why fighting is allowed. Enforcing is a part of the game so that no liberties like stick swinging is taken. Of course it still happens, but there's grave consequences for that...

I just saw a story on him on ESPN yesterday. Ranks right up there with the worst sports injuries I have ever seen

They also didn't use curved sticks.

As far a two-handers to the head, remember Marty McSorley?

There was a case recently in the minors where a player took a two hander in the face. He fell to the ice and went into convulsions. It took 20 stitches to close the gash that he received.

football is contact sport, they dont fight in football. and if they do, there are penalties for it. all i'm saying is that fighting is very unsportsmanlike as a whole ... and allowing it in a sport as part of the normal sport just seems ridiculous to me. aside from the fighting, i still think hockey is more boring than baseball and golf, combined :p

If you dont think players fight in football, you've never watched a fumble pile closely. It's not a 'normal sport' it's a 'contact sport'. Hockey is an extremely fast sport to play and running into people at those speeds tend to get players more pissed off than pushing against them on a line in football, specially if they're not quite expecting it. Football, you're ALWAYS expecting to get hit.

Boxing hasn't changed much over the years; hockey has become increasingly brutal. Players don't seem to have much regard for each other these days.

Did you miss the part about the sticks ? It's a weapon and anything can set someone off. It takes .2 seconds for that thing to end someone's career or life.

I won't even argue with you if you think ANYTHING is more boring than baseball to watch. Hockey is one of the best games to play - you see over-30 leagues with guys in their 40s and 50s still playing because they love the game so much. Fighting isn't part of every league. If you don't like the NHL, that's fine. Others share the same opinion. But don't be dissing hockey... and most of all - don't be ignorant.

then you're biased against hockey anyway.. They fight in football.. Have you seen more than 3 games? They really just don't fight as often.

Other than Ray Chapman dying from a hit by pitch in the pre helmet days of 1920, what baseball fatalities have there been?

I was wrong.. there has been an NHL Death.

On January 13, 1968, William Masterson received a head injury during a game with the Oakland Seals, and he died 48 hours later at the age of 30. That same year a trophy called the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy was established by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, in his memory. After his death, his #19 jersey was officially retired by the Minnesota North Stars.

Corrected by my own forums hehe.
