How long is it before we stop buying Chinese made stuff?

I consciously look for stuff that are not made in China when buying things, unfortunately, as lot of things are made in China. If it's a food product, then definitely not.

Do you do the same? Do you care?

There will be a day when the cons start to out weight the pros of buying cheap stuff from China, and that day is fast approaching, where will we get our stuff from?

When people wake up and realize and start treating them for what they are - the enemy.

I would really like to stop buying stuff made in China and will do so when given the choice.

I try to avoid China-origin food at the Asian grocers for health reasons. It's probably irrational but I feel safer with stuff from Taiwan, Malaysia, & Singapore.

I JUST finished piecing together a new-to-me mountain bike and tried to use only made in America parts if possible. As a rule, I try to buy products that have tech support in the US as well... Bose, AT&T for starters do. Dell, HP, no way.

Generally prices are the same or perhaps a bit more, but the quality is almost always better if it's made here.

They become the enemy the day we stop trading with them. We certainly do not need another enemy. They depend on us as much as we depend on them. Without the Chinese and Wallymart, your purchasing power would be greatly reduced.

Nothing irrational about that, I wouldn't trust food from there either, they can't even get simple shit right without somehow fucking it up. I'd say a large portion of the world agrees with you too, remember during the Olympics a lot of teams had their food imported and China even had special grow houses built to make food just for the olympians.

As for the topic, I try and avoid it. I look where things are made and if I can find what I want not being made in China and preferably in the US I'll buy it even if it is a little bit more. I was at the store the other day and I saw 2 other people also looking for where stuff was made, made me smile that we are totally lost yet.

90% of your household products are made in China now a day. Even Apple products are made in China.

People always say that they need our consumption for survival. What happens when they begin consuming what they produce? Sure right now their standard of living is low, but it's increasing exponentially, and if they start buying what they make, I don't see how their GDP won't grow the same way that ours did. Post war we became a consumer driven economy, buying non-essential items that were mostly made here, back in those days. Why won't China see this same growth pattern?

I do care and I do pay attention, but the American consumer has already spoken and voted with his pocket book. People like you and I are just a drop in the ocean. We are an incredibly short sighted people.

I wanna know how long it'll be until the US govt outsources the US Mint and starts having them make our money over there. Especially the coins.... No doubt, they'll end up making pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters all out of lead and just give it a 'spritz' of lead-based paint so it'll look the right color.

Without China leeching off of the US' economy via the peg, we wouldn't have to worry about purchasing power or deficits (to this extent).

Why?

We don't want to be an industrial nation any longer. We are a technological society. We want to make expensive thinking stuff, and by making I mean designing and letting someone else make it, and leave the making of regular old stuff to someone else.

China is replaceable by any of the other competing emerging nations - they know this so they cheat and peg the currency. They are their own enemy.

As long as they make cheap stuff, there will ALWAYS be a not-insignificant segment of the American population that buys it. That won't change unless we completely cut off trade with them.

I wasn't aware of this. I am looking for a new laptop and support and where they base the operation is a concern to me. I bought an Inspiron e1505 back in 2006 (it's still kickin, just outdated...) and it's been a great laptop. The customer service was really the only thing preventing me buying another Dell.
