How long is an Apple iPod warranty?

If anything goes wrong you can take it into say an Apple store and they'll just swap the unit out? Reason being is my friend said he bought an iPod u2 edition and basically it wasn't in the best shape. The hard drive was failing and he took it in to swap it out and they honored the warranty.
