I have an Opty 165 that's been overclcked for around a year.
Been running 2.7 GHz since day one. In a Shuttle SN25P.
I have a QX6700 system running @ 3.2 GHz for about 2 months.

Currently active systems

E6400 3.3ghz for 2 months
X2 3800+ 2.5ghz for 5 months
A64 3200+ 2.5ghz for 2 years 6 months

Not currently using
A64 3700+ ran almost 2yrs at 2.8ghz (pulled for current C2D upgraded, sitting in the drawer as a spare)
1.4 Athlon Tbird that ran 2.0 for 3 1/2 years overclocked and still runs but taking up closet space.

Well, he did say past systems. This was just a list of all my overclocked systems going back to 2000, and the time I kept each one before upgrading.

this makes me feel good about overclocking my system. I'm kind of scared to ask. Who's ruined the CPU's by overclocking their setup .

since forever ... *all* my cpus have been oc'd ... for years
[last one was a P4 2.80c at 3.31Ghz for over 3 years ... it is in another person's rig now]

but then i tend to not use additional voltage or a just a very mild vcore boost so i have never "fried" a CPU

I've been overclocking for around 15 years, and I've never even damaged a cpu from it. Now, I've worn out more than one motherboard in a short period of time, compared to how long they would have lasted, if I hadn't been overclocking. And I've had a considerable amount of cheaper power supplies fail, because of the added stress of overclocking. That's why I always (now) buy good motherboards, that are built for overclocking, and good power supplies, that are capable of exceeding the amount of power I'll ever need from them.

excellent point!

i recently learned the value of a superior PS ... the hard way

i ran my x1950p on my old 480w Thermaltake that exceeded the minimum but didn't meet the recommended amperage ... evidently it was underpowered as my video card died after a few weeks ... and fortunately i was able to exchange it thru ZZf after the 30 days
-or Sapphire screws you with a $15 RMA "processing fee" :|

and sometimes an actual PS failure takes out way more than your PS ... of course i went a little extreme with a 850w OCZ ... but i am planning ahead to OC'ing QC and Xfire or Sli

it is "sad" to spend many hundreds on your HW and then *skimp* on a marginal PS

Okay...wayyyyy too much misinformation you've been fed, i can tell.

Unless you overvolt too much (which in turn causes higher temps), you will never even ruin a CPU.

It is possible it might only last 25.51 years instead of 30.07 years, but that's the kind of range we're talking.

Also, with many CPUs, especially current A64s/Opterons/C2Ds, you can undervolt & overclock, which theoretically increase lifespan.
Obviously, there's no proof, but i'm just trying to put things in perspective.

actually, i think intel said either 7 or 9 years was the median expected life

and you *can* and do shorten the CPU's life by OC'ing without adding voltage ... electromigration speeds up with the simple OC ... added voltage is an exponential deterioration with added heat issues

but it is a *balance* ... if your CPU only lasts 5 years ... it is probably out of date and no longer oc'd if still in use ;)

"XP-M 2600+ @ 2.4Ghz - 3 years"

same here. Goooooo Barton! !!
Starting to show its age a tad, AGP mobo and all. NF7-S ver2

My 9800 Pro->XT has got its max OC at 447/370

Like I wanted to get a nice IPS panel monitor for 350 but the default res is too high, I'd have to upgrade the whole thing. (Unemployed :( )

Um, just wondering, but why do you have a 3700 that goes to 2.8GHz in a drawer while you're actively using a 3200 that only goes to 2.5GHz? I'm guessing one's 754 the other's 939?

A64 3000+ at 2.5ghz for 2+ years now-- main system
AXP 1700+ at 2.2ghz for 4+ years now-- son's
1.2ghz Tualatin Celeron at 1.4ghz for 4 years-- daughter's

Sometime later this year, I will be building a new C2D (or C2Q or Barcelona) rig and passing everything downward. I'll probably keep that old Tualatin running and set it up for my youngest son (2y/o) to mess around with since he enjoys bothering his older siblings while they use their computers.

Cyrix M300@ some meager OC. (had it for 2 yrs before giving it to my sibling)
AMD K62-400 to 450 I think (had it for around 3-4 yrs before giving it away)
Celeron 300A to 4xx - also had it for a few yrs before giving it away,
TBird 1Ghz@1.2Ghz running since 2000 until today (given to a friend's kid for school stuff)
AXP-M@2.3xGhz since 2004 to be given away soon
C2D4300@3.2Ghz about a month or so
Building a P4 3.4Ghz machine with extra stuff laying around to be used as an office machine and will OC it too.

Never had a chip die from OCing and I think most ran for at least 5 yrs and were replaced with a faster machine.
I think an MB and some HDD did die before getting replaced though.

hmmm my first oc was a Cely 300A that i pushed to 450mhz. I had her for about 1 yr.

Then i stepped up to a P4 2.53 which was a terrible OCer. I couldnt get that thing stable past 3.0ghz. So i gave up ocing for a while. I think it was my craptastic Soyo P4 dragon.

Then i ran into my first baby chip. X2 3800+ she been oc'd since day 1 after stablility was drawn to see if chip was good or not. This was when they first came out. And i bought her at a heavy premium of 360 dollars? dont remember the exact price, but it was when they were expensive.

She still runs oc'd in my NAS at 2.4ghz on stock voltage. :D

Then i got my prized opty. I only had her for 4 months b4 someone bought her for 2 times what she was worth. But she did 3.08ghz at 1.325V you cant complain about that.

Now im running my E6600, and this 680i board is giving me hell. She's stable, but something on my board keeps holding me back. I was pusing max 3.6ghz at 1.4V exactly. On this 680i it takes 1.43V i think its the Vdroop issue on the 680i

But from what i see, chances are you'll replace that cpu b4 she burns up and dies a horrible death OCing. The longest i hold onto a CPU is about 1-1.5 yrs. After that, the condors, errr my cousins come and salvage whatever i dont use.

Current setup is mostly from last August (GPU/Mobo). I've had the CPU OC'ed since January 2006, though.
