How long for domain ownership to transfer?

The company I work for had an outside person register domain names and host our site. Now he is quitting, and I'm taking over. He said he's put in an ownership transfer with Network Solutions last Tuesday, but I'm not sure that he actually has. How do I know that he's initiated the process? All I need is for the admin contact info to change so that I can transfer the domain to Go Daddy. Can I make an inquiry with NetSol?

I tried calling Network Solutions, but the rep said she couldn't tell me anything without the account password. She said I either needed to ask him or get the password. I guess I'll have to file a domain name dispute resolution if nothing happens soon.
