How Long For Domain Names?

I registered a Domain yesterday and had to change some name servers so it would work with Zonedit. How long should it take before that domain name becomes active and gets directed to the IP I asked for?

Depends who you use for nameservers, the higher up they are in the hiearchy list, the faster the changes will take effect. The fastest I've ever experienced is an hour or two, and the slowest was over 24 hrs.

bump, anyone else have any input? I don't really need to know how long it takes for the namservers to take effect, I need to know how long after I register a domain it becomes acitve.

moneyshot,

If you used a decent registrar, it should be "active" immediately. It is the DNS entry that takes some time to propogate.

.. And that depends on your TTL that's in your domain record. If your TTL is set to 5 days then your record will be cached on a local DNS Server for 5 days before it tries to renew. So, even if the update happens in 2 days some DNS servers will still cache it for 5 days. nslookup should show your TTL if you do a set q=any at the beginning of the nslookup session.
