How long for a CPU to burn

There is some bad noise going on inside my case and I suspect it's my CPU fan. I'm wondering if I unplug the fan for 10sec to see if it's the source of the noise, would that be enough to damage my CPU ?

I've started a pc without the hsf for like 5 seconds and turned it right off and it was fine.

Depends on the size of the heatsink. I can stop the fan on my Alpha for several mins before heat becomes a problem, a smaller heatsink will overheat much faster.

Pretty much any heatsink will be fine for 30+ seconds of no fan on it. However I wouldn't guarentee this especially if the processor is under load.

Make sure it's idling, leave a monitoring app open and be ready to turn it off at the PSU.

just open the case and listen.....better to unplug the other fans (or stop it with a pencil or by putting a finger on the middle part) and see which fan is the one that's causing the noise, don't forget about the psu

I would definitely not unplug the fan while the computer is on. You'd probably be safe if you were to turn on the PC for a few seconds with the fan disconnected, though.

DO NOT turn on your PC without a heatsink on the CPU.

if a ninja can cool a CPU w/o a fan permanently, any cooler should be good for a little while no load

I've had my CPU fan off for 30 minutes before and it stayed about the same temperature. Depends on how good your heatsink is and how much heat your CPU produces. I wouldn't do it on a Prescott.

With my SI-120, I can start computer, boot up, load windows, and let it idle for as long as I want

My temps are rediculously high under load though, but idle it's about 50-60 without a fan.

I'm running my heatsink without a fan permanently (of course, it's a Thermalright XP-120, so it's HUGE, and I've got it ducted to the rear case fans using a nice cardboard ghetto duct, and my Athlon 64 3200+ is currently running at 38c with Folding@Home going.....)

Anyway, you should be fine just stopping the CPU fan with your finger for a few seconds to see if it's causing the noise. You could probably even leave it stopped for a minute or so. If it's a fairly small stock cooler, though, I definitely wouldn't leave it stopped for a long period of time.

I know it's an oldie but worth the view. Note the lower right area of the display, it's in good
condition. About 1minuet into the vid the lower right area of the display is dinged pretty good.

Great fun with junk parts but why not protect the display?? *shakes head*

I've tried it without unplugging the fan but the noise is so big, I can't figure out which part does it. The only part I have'nt changed beside the CPU fan is the HD, and I really whish this noise is not comming from my HD. I'll keep you guys posted.

Doesn't look fake to me. The ding at the lower right of the display screen looks real.
At the beginning of the vid the display is clean.

Well Galvanized.......Note that no (since, say 1999) motherboard on earth could supply over 4 volts to a processor. Note that how the K7 architecture could never get above 4GHz. Note that processors do not blow-up when they overheat, when they overheat, they melt down (see Tom's Hardware).

Finally heres the REAL kicker: look REEEEEAL close at the task bar and notice that CPU-Z isn't open. Hence, the CPU-z shot is obviously photochopped.

Other oddities include: the hole in the motherboard AND the table, how they were able to boot into windows with the HS NOT clipped down and further, without the fan running.

Sorry I realize you probably already knew this I just couldn't resist.

I note your notes Bull Dog and do sit corrected by the substance of your post.

To be very honest, I just got serious about what makes comps tick 4 years ago. At present I'm considering my fifth build. So at 50++yoa the past workings of rigs is still new to me. I'm outside the mold of a total geek but more than willing to do my homework even at this late stage in life. For me, it's either model railroading or rig building Been play'en at recapping a dead mainboard just for the fun of learning the technique so it can be done for real when needed.
