ok, i've had this 4 litre bottle of milk in my fridge for like over 2 weeks now...theres no expiration date on it, but it says "sell by 06/26/02." now, its only the 29th.. but its been opened for a long time. I just had a bowl of cereal with it and it definately tastes different... if my stomach acts up on me i'm gonna be so pissed off.

anyone know? thanx

i've always heard that milk is good for about a week after the sell by day. It might just be your mind playing tricks on you and making you think it tasted different. The mind can do some powerful tricks

Milk is generally good for 7-10 days after "sell-by" depending on fat content. Nonfat milk lasts a lot longer. I just drank some that "expired" on June 6 and it tasted fine.

However, as far as I know there is no set law on regulating this.. and some places will take milk off the shelf and re-mark it with a new date as well.

If it tasted off why finish it?? Gross

You are going to be sick....hope you are by a bathroom tomorrow. Sucks to be you.

Usually once milk is opened it is only good at most for like a week. Unopened you are safe 2-3 days after the sell by date to drink it.

That's completely backwards if i'm not mistaken. Lower fat milk (like skim or 1/2%) expires closer to the date than a high fat (like 2% or whole/3.25%). Most people don't know this, but for every minute that milk sits unrefrigerated, that's an hour's worth of shelf life lost. So...if milk is sitting on the floor at the store selling the milk waiting to go in the cooler, make sure you get one with a good date.

However, as far as I know there is no set law on regulating this.. and some places will take milk off the shelf and re-mark it with a new date as well.

If that's not illegal, that's the most immoral thing i've EVER heard of. If a store has a reputation for "remarking milk", i'd NEVER buy from there again. I'm sure the health department would close them down too if word got to them. Hopefully, that's just a rumor.

The only thing that a store WILL do is cut the price on the milk IF THEY SO CHOOSE TO about two-three days before the kill date.

Milk lasts until yesterday.

"Is this bad? Try it..."

Funny, because it's true. :D

My wife said it goes bad quicker after it's been exposed to the air. So, the more air in the bottle the quicker it goes bad. Sounds logical, but more likely coincidental.

I don't drink milk much, and hardly ever plain... has to be in cereal or loaded with other crap (like chocolate syrup, ice cream, cookie crumbs, doughnuts, etc). :p

Health Department can't even do anything since it's not against the law. I think Dateline did a special about this about a month ago. This kind of stuff is REALLY REALLY common esp. with meat

I'd stick with the expiration date, if it smells funny don't drink it, toss it out.
