how long does it usually take to study for the GRE?

I"m actually planning to take the GRE next fall, the semester before I"m supposed to graduate, so I was just wondering when I should start preparing for the GRE. I know it is different for everyone, depending on how much they remember and how smart they are; but with a good book, how long does it usually take to do well on the test?

The reason I am asking is because my girlfriend, who is an exchange student, said she used 6 months to study for the TOEFL test(a hard english test for foreigners who want to study in the U.S). Whe I said "wow," she said that it is normal, and people usually study for a year or more. wtf....that is crazy, imho.

so I just want to know.......to get an idea whether I should actually go buy a nice book and start getting familiar w/ it

Get your hands on as many practice tests as you can. If you're a native English speaker and reasonably proficient at algebra/trig, reading out of a prep book isn't going to help you much.
