How long does it usually take for dell to produce and send an order?

Hey guys, I recently purchased a system at dell, about 8 days ago and it's still in production phase. Is it me or does it take Dell an awfully long time to fulfill an order such as a basic Inspiron laptop with nothing added to it? This is really irritating me because I need the laptop asap for my schoolwork. I didn't anticipate it to be this long for me to get the system. -_-;;;

I should've gone with toshiba, cheaper as well.

They are giving priority to businesses affected by the disasters. This may add a slight delay. It usually takes between 7-14 days to arrive, if everything you ordered is in stock.

I don't know about that. I ordered an Inspiron on September 1st, and everything was in stock. It's now been 17 days since then. Granted, they're giving priority to the disaster needs, but still, I think mine's taking an awful long time. The e-mail said the expected ship date was October 17th. Now, I know that's the extreme end of the spectrum, but I might be looking at a month and a half wait.

my sister ordered one in early August, it arrived about 2.5 weeks later. It was an Inspiron 8100, fully loaded, with the new 1.13 GHz chip that came out.

I don't know about you but when I pay for something I expect it to be here. This is horrible. There should be a more efficient way for them to produce things. Home consumers take a large percentage of their customer base, we shouldn't have to wait this long in order to get something that we bought.

I takes me about half a day to make a put a computer together, buy components, install them together, put in os and software, tweak it and etc. It shouldn't take a MONTH to make a product especially since they're a large corporation with an enormous factory that pushes out hundred(s) systems (desktops and laptops) in a day.

I'm starting to see that Dell isn't cracked up what it was supposed to be.

Normal buying atmosphere, you pay, you get product within a week at most, and you're happy because the product is fine.

I wouldn't be normally this pissed off but I needed it for my school, now I'm stuck with nothing to work on at school.

Wow, I ordered a Dell Inspiron in August and I had it was at my door in less than 2 weeks. They shipped it UPS ground and I live in New Jersey. This was even after they held up my order cause my CC company put a hold on the charge. Maybe I was lucky I guess... It was the first time I've ordered anything from them too.

i ordered a laptop from them early this month (thanks to hot deals forum)
it took like 4-5 days for them to produce and test and all
after that it took like a week to have them delivered to my place
i don't know if it makes any difference, but home system may take longer than small/business systems... maybe because they want to make sure it's built better so the tech supports won't get bugged as much?

also, the whole thing that happened last week may have caused the delay, since they may be helping those who need them first, or there's a delay in shipping of the parts or the completed systems

I ordered two Inspiron 8000s from Dell earlier this year. The first one was in production phase for about 3 days. From order date to in my hands was about 8 days. Not business days. The second one was in production for 5 days I think.

You can always call them and they will tell you whats going on. Also remember to visit the Dell forums, 25 days after you receive the computer and ask for a pricematch on your system. I got a $400 refund on mine. The difference in what I paid and what it cost 30 days later... :)

i ordered an inspiron 8100 on August 30th and my shipping date is 10/01/01.

i agree with others, i cant jusitfy why it takes them so long. the sales guy said it will be probably much sooner than that, but nothing so far, starting to get really annoying.

They've been very good about the systems that I've ordered in the past. Usually, if it hasn't gone to production it's because something has held them up (parts or Payment). They have the best customer service on that side for sure.

They've alwys been able to tell me in the past what was holding it up (ie Ram, MOBO, or something else).

i never had any problems with them previously....ordered 2 home systems and had them shipped in very reasonable time

Actually, they do not place a charge on your CC until the item ships out.

Dell, along with nearly all other comp manufacturers, do not "make" the components that go into your system -- they are made elsewhere by companies all over the world and shipped to an assembly line. So all it takes is one component to be in shortage that will stop your unit from shipping. The coordination is difficult because they are trying to save costs by not ordering too many of something they wont need later on.

Well, according to their fancy "real-time" order status site, the "Pre-Production" phase is when they're waiting for the parts to come in, so once it gets past that phase, parts should be in and ready for building. Grrr...looks like I'm spending some time on the phone at work today.


Well, I was really looking forward to the nVidiaGo chip; anyone know which other laptops use those?

speaking of dells... does anyone know how good their refurbed stuff is?

i saw a Inspiron (sp?) 8000

1ghz, 128mb (1 dimm), 20gig, 15" UXGA, 16mb Geforce2go, 56k, 3 year extened waranty

for around $1700

This sounds like a good deal to me... I know of someone who got a refurbed system from them and it seemed quite nice... but I'm still iffy about the refurb.

Anyone have any experience with Dell refurbs?

I called Dell today at work, and after finally getting a human on the phone, they were really very nice. The woman I talked to said that it was the extra battery I ordered with my system that was holding it up for so long. So she offered to change my order and have the extra battery shipped separately, but as part of the same order, so I wouldn't have to pay the higher price of a standalone battery. So, not only has my ship date moved from the 17th of OCtober to the 4th, but I get my system for $50 cheapr, for no apparent reason. :)

Might wanna give them a call and find out what the hold-up is, Chrono.

I placed my order on Sep 7th and it shipped today! So thats an 11 day turn around. Pretty damn good for a top of the line Inspiron 8100 w/ everything.
