Could you tell me how long your laptop takes to complete one seti unit, and what processor is in it? I'm only interested in laptop computers.

My laptop is not on constantly to complete one work unit. Plus I would not try running SETI on it since cooling in laptops is not great.

So, your laptop is incapable of completing a work unit w/o catching fire. Who built it? Let me stay away from them.

Wouldn't running SETI on a laptop cause it not to clock throttle and thus achieve inferior battery life? Wouldn't matter if it was plugged in I suppose.

Where in my post did I say it would catch fire?

Why else are you worried about it getting warm?

Others have had problems running distributed computing programs on their laptops due to the processor load. If you ever left OT and browsed some of the other forums you would probably see some of this information.

I have a PII-366. It runs a SETI WU in about 15 hours. The elaspe time is often longer because of travel time. Most days I am lucky to complete one WU.

Well I run my laptop 24/7 and it averages 5 hours a unit.

It is a compaq Evo180 with a pIII 1ghz proc. running XP and 256 mb ram.

It seems to know when seti is running, as soon as I start seti up when I get to the office the fan come on as soon as seti starts. As soon as I shut seti down the fan goes off. Great little laptop. It has been crunching for a year now.:D

I had an IBM tualitin core PIII800 laptop that was doing SETI and averaging 5hr18 minute WUs
:D

The only time I've had problems running SETI with laptops (using A/C) is when the cooling fan on the Dell Lattitudes would fail. It wasn't a problem with DC apps, but poor design/components from Dell. We had to replace the fans on a lot of the laptops that didn't run SETI.

I also ran RC5 on a bunch of Gateway laptops for a long time, no problems there either.

The only issue I ran into is draining the battery faster, so you just don't run SETI while on battery.

Yep, my Dell Latitude fan was a pain. It would sometime start making a noise that sounded like a mournful wail! They fixed it by swapping out the computer for another PII-366. I so hoped for a better computer! :( A new-hire gets a PIII-1.13MHz or better with DVD
