how long does it take you to load UT2004 maps?

I just bought UT2004 and I am not impressed with the loading times. I had the demo before and it took like 15 seconds to load large onslaught maps like Torlan from scratch, the like 5-10 afterwards. The full version takes like over a minute to load the same map from scratch and at least 40 seconds the next time. Is it supposed to take this long?

EDIT: TOOK SCREENSHOTS

OK, I took some screenshots to compare. I tried my best to keep the camera in the same position for both versions.

Torlan doesn't have any really big changes.

Primeval has more of a change.

I guess the differance is enough to justify the differance in loading times. There might be other various changes between the versions to effect the loading time. Maybe there are imprivements that make the game run faster in the full version that take longer to load or something. I haven't tested performace yet. Gettting more RAM might fix it anyway.

Takes me no more than 37 seconds to load any of the maps. I thought it was kinda weird, since I'm using PATA and a single 80 gig Seagate hard drive for the game's storage, but I timed it (mainly because the hard drive benchmarks online with the raptor drives were taking ~40 seconds to load some levels), and it really did only take 37 seconds at the max.

Edit: On my old rig with a 2 meg cache 80 gig seagate, Athlon XP 2400+ @2.2 ghz, and 512 megs of ram it took FOREVER to load the game though... like 2-4 minutes. The new(er) rig is an Athlon 64 3200+ with 1 gig of ram (pc 3200).

Make sure you have at least 1GB RAM. Also if you don't have a 256 MB card turn down the texture detail.

I should know this since i am a UT2k4 addict, but i believe the demo is a lot lighter for video settings that the actual game is.

Load times can take a long time even with a great system for some huge maps.

Just to see how it brutalizes even teh best PCs, look in the ONS serverlist for the map Genesis4000.
Then go grab some lunch while that map is loading, as it is effing enormous.
It tends to freeze most people's sytems, lol...

Just to reaffirm what others have said, if you don't have 1024 MB of RAM...you're gonna want to get it.
UT2k4 is a RAM whore.

The texture detail is only a hair better on the full version compared to the demo. I'm using an Athon 64 2800+ with 512MB RAM. I noticed that the full game is more of a RAM hog than the demo was. I do have the latest patch. I'll try upgrading my RAM.

Good.

You are gonna see a huge improvement, believe me.

I've played with 512 & 1024...the difference is like night & day.

That doesn't sound right - I remember the demo version had really stripped down textures compared to the retail. At least with UT2003 anyway.

I'm pretty sure thats not the case, at least not from what I've seen. Maybe the older demo versions have more stripped down textures?
