How long does it take to get car insurance?

It should be effective the same (or next) day they add you to the policy. They'll probably print you some temporary thing to carry as proof and mail the cards later.

Well, usually they give you temporary cards the same day you buy it...if your parents are going into the office to add you, presumably they'll get temp cards for you.

Or they'll lie and say "Oh, now you'll have to wait another week for the cards to arrive":p

I know it's exciting to get your license (I know I was excited) but try to keep it in your pants. Trust me, there will be more than enough oppurtunity to drive and believe me when I say the novelty wears off really fast. Anyhow, I was originally added to my parents plan when I got my license and it took like 3 days to get valid coverage.

EDIT: There are TWO forms of insurance you must have to legally drive: One for the driver and one for the vehicle. If you don't have your own car, then you only need insurance on the driver right now, since your parent's car(s) are already insured.

And I guess all the teen driving bashers are asleep?

You'll get bashed when you get into your first accident in 2 weeks, without insurance.

No teen driving bahser here, because I am one. :D See my above post for more info. However, I do not believe that you need a card unless you own a car.

I disagree...I still love driving. Guess it depends on the person.

Well I shouldn't say that I dislike it, because I don't. I guess my viewpoint would change if I had a fun car.

Do I have to wait in the mail to get those insurance cards and crap?

I remember you from Xbox-Scene. Don't worry about it, it took me a day to get covered. I just got my license about a month, maybe a bit more ago.

Yup, sorry to double post a bit, but it's always fun to drive when there is little traffic out. Or to smoke a ricer when you're cruising in a family sedan with nothing more than a CAI for fuel efficiency. Perhaps it's just cause I'm still young and stupid.

Sedans/SUVs, the usual.

SUVs are the worst after you've been driving a small car for a long time. I'm used to driving my little 2-Door Cavalier and I drive my mom's GMC to the dealer for inspection... it was like driving a bus. :p

Hey man, how you been? Xbox-Scene is down right now. lol. What are you driving?

2000 Chevy Malibu LS, it was cheap, low mileage, and solid. New PCM and a CAI brought up my fuel economy a good bit.

Not sure what the laws are where you live, but in MOST states, you DON'T insure the driver, only the vehicle, BUT, your insurance can follow you if you drive rental cars and such...Having 2 separate policies would suck...fvcking insurance is already xpendy enough...

OP, if your parents are lucky, it should take a minimum of 4 years to get you insured...that way, the rates MIGHT drop a lot...;) if not, then realistically, 15 to 30 minutes...insuring teenage drivers is ridiculously expensive...but for a good reason I guess..

Don't quote me on this, but I *think* that there are two policies, but you get charged for one price. I live in PA, by the way.

Imagine driving a Dodge Grand Caravan, now that IS a bus:beer: (I'll have mine, you can have yours in a couple years:p) Drove my gf's Ion for a month and then came home to a mini-van. Hopefully I'll figure out a way to get my new car here soon (bought a car on eBay, small technicality is that it is currently located in NY and I have to get it to UT)

One phone call and you should be insured.
