How long does it take to fully charge a GameBoy Advance SP?

Got my son a GBA SP pack (Black GBA SP, Case, and Super Mario 4 w/guide) for Xmas. I'm tempted to spend the 90-100 minutes to break open the hermetically welded plastic to charge it up so that he can immediately play it.

not that long. i'm estimating about 1-2 hrs. never really timed mines. he can always play it while it's charging after he opens it.
 
I'd let it charge for 12 - 18 hours on the first charge after that you can charge it for the 1 - 2 hour charge time.
