How long does it take to fry a t-bird with no hs/fan?

I started mine without one and it shutdown in less than 1 sec. Is it possible to fry a chip that quick?

I doubt that your system shutdown because of heat if it was truely 1 sec. Some mobos are shutting down if the don't detect the fan rpm signal. Check yours out.

But NEVER EVER try to use your system without a heatsink again.

I'm not really so dumb as to leave off the heat sink, but I *was* dumb enough to leave the little plastic sheet over the thermal pad. Actually, I pulled it off as the instructions said, but it left a second layer underneath. Not realizing the pad itself was supposed to be pink instead of blue, and the instructions DID say a "colored pad.." well, it was the first HFS I had used that came with the bubblegum.. excuses excuses, right?

Anyway. Time-to-destruction for a 1.1GHz Thunderbird with single layer of plastic between core and thermal pad: literally, 10 seconds. It posted, I dropped into BIOS settings, and it locked up immediately and never posted ever again.

Hah hah, a Chrome Orb?! I may have lapses every now and then, but I'm nowhere NEAR *that* dumb! It was the OEM hsf from AMD, which is a Taisol. I told the sales guy the truth when I went to exchange it, and showed him the instructions and the result, and he laughed, and I deserved that, and then he exchanged it for me.

hey brio i just call technical support tell about my problem they say that is the mobo problem. so i send it back. well one thing before you realy send it back is check led cable first . are realy probly connected to the mobo or not cos this allso cause problem like you have k. i hope so try it and it may help ya. for my self i send the mobo back.

The new bios for the KT7 will not even let the computer boot if there is no fan on the Fan1 connector. Of course that doesn't mean you have to have it on the CPU. 😉

ChipNOW,

What you posted is not correct for high powered BIRDS. Most TBIRD mobos read temperature through a thermistor located in the socket, under the cpu. Ineffect, they read the 'cold' side of the chip. By the time this thermistor records a dangerous temp, the CPU is toast. Check out any of MikeW's posts on this topic.

The note which came with a friends duron said that the CPU is destroyed within 5secs while running without fan/hs.

ROFLMAO!! 😀 That is one of the funniest things I have read all day..🙂
