How long does it take to format an Ipod Mini on a PC?

During the software install, I plugged in the Mini when it said and started the format process as instructed. It says formatting and the Mini says not to disconnect, but how friggin' long should it take? It is a 4GB drive for g*d sake.
 
Oddly, when I do a software restore (format) on my 2G iPod, it takes only a few seconds. I figure it was just doing a quick format.
