How long does it take to format a hard drive?

I have a 40.0 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM hard drive....XP Professional is really making me mad...im thinking of "downgrading" to windows ME, like i used to have... right now my hard drive is in NTFS (due to XP), so hopes of getting a dual boot is small. i can make a new partition but thats just a headache... i have partition magic 7.0, how long would it take about to complete format my hard drive...to NTFS...or FAT32....?
 
The actual formatting takes like 15 or 20 minutes. You will have to choose FAT32 if you want to dual boot since WinME uses FAT32.
 
I have a 13 gig WD 5400 hard drive and the time it took to format the drive NTFS (from FAT32) was about 30 minutes. It takes about the same time going from NTFS to FAT32. Hope this helps a little
 
Can't you just delete the partition, remake it and format under FAT32? Should take 5 minutes or so.
