I asked my friend how long it takes to become a New Yorker... she said it takes 10 years of living in the city.

Then I asked her about other cities, she had answers.

So is there a specific answer for each city? Does it vary?

How long does it take to become a Bostonian?

that's what i thought. what do you mean become a resident of your city? people become residents of states, not cities. if you want to vote for mayor, i say if you're living there before the election, you're good.

I think every state has their own "unofficial" rules to parallel the legal residency requirements. Cities might further break it down... but I've not heard of it. In Alaska, you're a legal resident in most cases after 12 months; but for tuition purposes you generally have to have been here 2 years to get resident rates... but there's exceptions to that. And the unofficial standard is 7 years. Supposedly that's when you're a "real" Alaskan who's lasted long enough that you won't cry and go back home after the first few hard winters. At that point they call you a Sourdough. If you haven't been here 7 years, then you're a Cheechako.
