I've been nicotine free for almost 4 months now and it still hurts like h*ll. Could someone who successfully quit please tell me how long the hurting lasts ? I'm not talking about WANTING a cig, I'm talking about that awful feeling that you know will go away if you burn one. :(

I watched my parents go through giving it up, didn't look fun. My dad had serious asthma and my mom got a serious blood clot in her chest, they didn't have a choice.

They've been off it for 3 years now, and they both say that the smell of cigarette smoke now makes them sick. I think it was probably the first sixth months for them that was the worst. My dad went through dozens of bulk bags of suckers and gum. They didn't use any patches or nicotine gums or anything.

They're both fine today, I'm sure a cigarette sounds good every once in a while, but they never need it anymore.

Just find something that takes your mind off it the most and use it.

less than a second.....only about the time it takes for you to firmly decide that you will take full responsibility for your actions, purchases, consumptions

Thanks guys. I'm hoping that in another couple of months the sun will shine again. :(

I get angry every time I see that stupid commercial where the guy says "I smoked for 10 years and quit in just 2 days". As flagrant a lie as this is, I find it hard to believe it's even allowed on TV.

For those of you who don't smoke, don't start. Trust me on this one. :(

It takes a LONG time.

But one piece of advice I can give you is to NOT drink. Drinking makes you want a cig like never before and when you drink, you are usually surrounded by smokers. So the best thing is to just go on that wagon at the same time.

Also, I hate to say this, but dump your smoking friends. They make it WAY to easy to "have just one."

It took me a couple years before I started being disgusted by the smell of fresh smoke (stale smoke was awful to me in just a few months).

Oh, and start exercising NOW. The first thing that heppens when someone quits is weight gain. Your metabolism drops and your impulse to stuff your face rises.

Just stick with it, it gradually goes away with time. You're feeling the psychological addiction; the physical one goes away within two weeks of quitting smoking, patches, nicotine gum, etc. If you actually did have one at this point it would taste like ass and make you feel lightheaded and a bit uncomfortable. Things you associate with smoking will also be tough, but doing them enough will get you used to it (ie. drinking coffee, drinking alcohol, etc). I quit close to two years back and the cravings are all but gone now.
