How long does it take for DNS/host to propogate?

Hey,

I registered a domain.
I purchased hosting.
I changed the nameservers @ the registrar.
I can log into my domain @ the host.

But I can't ping my domain and emails get returned undelivered "unknown host."

It's only been about 90 minutes now...long long does it take?

OK...that answers my question...dang, that's gonna suck.

Thank you, though. :)

ROFL

For some reason, that was really funny. :D

Edit: BTW, check tomorrow morning; there's a good chance it will have propogated by then.

Isn't it usually 24 hrs? TTL is default @ 24 hrs correct? Do any hosts actually raise the TTL to ease the load on the DNS servers?

I searched Google and apparently the official answer is "It will take 24-48 hours for DNS propagation."

Of course, real men memorize and use only their IP address.

Well, we were all n00bs once. I used to offer hosting services and I'd get that question all the time. I guess that's why it struck a funny bone. Anyway, good luck with your new domain.

Full DNS propagation across all name servers takes up to 48 hours, but DNS servers near your name server will update much more quickly. I've has it happen in as little as 3 hours.

What's the URL for the site?...I'll try a bunch of name servers and see what I can find.

Several years ago, it used to take about 48 hours to propagate worldwide, these days I'm typically seeing more like 13 hours.

Of course, real men memorize and use only their IP address.

Makes virtual hosting tough, though.

My wife asked what I was laughing at, but didn't think it was that funny when I told her

If that is being real men, then real men are real dumb.

Real men use a separate server for each domain.

Hey, I only have a class C--and my electric bill is high enough already.

what the...why are you wasting your money on a Class C? :p

What's wrong with a class C? I suppose I should have had the foresight to raise my hand back when IANA was handing out class Bs right and left, but my needs are fairly modest. (My house is probably larger than average, but it's not that big.)

Typically 24-48 hours. If you registered with Network Solutions (I SINCERELY HOPE NOT!), they HUP their DNS servers I think twice per day (noon and midnight IIRC). Usually it doesn't take too long, but it can take a while.
