How long does it take for a still image to burn into a monitor ?

Funny you ask that because I was wondering the same thing as i've just purchased a used monitor(at a great price mind you)and the reason I got it so cheap was because it has a huge outline of a square around the whole screen, kind of like someone made their screen size too small and left it that way for the whole life of the monitor, or at least the time that they had it.

i heard this a while ago, not sure how true it is but something like 30-60 continuous days for new monitors.

don't put much money on this though, pulling this out of the cob webs from waaay back.

You don't have to worry that much with new monitors because they have a vastly lower phosphorus content than older monitors did. In 1992 I did a burn on a 14" dell monitor in about a day and half. I have left my monitor (Syncmaster 955df) on for a day with no problem.

about two years i think. I got one burned out already; the one I am using is about to go too. Need to get a good 21inch monitor for cheap. Any suggestions? :)

Well your father is right. Of course if he has his monitor using the power saving features then that is a moot issue.

I have left mine on for a few days with no issue. I usually use power saving mode if I am going to be away that long.
