How long does it take for a processor to burn?

I'm having probs and I'd thought I post here for a quick answer.

I'm suspecting that my processor might be burnt out.. i did smell a subtle plasticy burning smell.. but the PC's never been on for more than 5 seconds (since it won't POST and turn off by itself) and the cpu fan's been on the whole time.. is this possible?

lol, if it's an AMD chip, it'll take about 2-3 seconds if you dont have a fan on it.

u sure? i highly down that.. in 2-3 seconds, temperature can't even make that high of a jump.. it's not like im putting the chip in the flame... now that'll take 2-3 seconds.

Expecialy if the HSF is on backwards or not making contact.

Yes, it's true. With any AMD cpu above 1GHz that doesn't have some type of thermal protection and is run without the HSF, it can burn up almost instantaneously upon power-up. You seriously could not pull the plug fast enough to save it. The biggest fault for this lies in the initial power surge.

If your cpu HSF was on the whole time though, that would be unlikely to happen. If your "probs" are that your cpu won't POST (typically cpu failure represents as power-on, fans spin, but no beep, no video, no POST), why don't you take off the HSF and take a look for damage? It could be something else as well. I "released the blue smoke" on an older mobo one time (for no reason, powered-on for the last time I guess), nothing like getting a faceful of smoky, ionized air

i found this out,it cost me $150 + 8% tax
for an Athlon tbird 950,
took it back to the store {local}
they said; uh you want to buy another cpu today?
No this one is bad, !I want this one replaced.
Gee you bought OEM, outta site warranty..
If you had paid us $20 to install & test it in your computer;but; SOL :|
so much for buying Anything from That local computer store

Yup, its true. A modern AMD CPU burns up almost instantly without any means of cooling.

I guess I got lucky. I actually booted up an xp 1700+ all the way into windows before I realized that the heatsink wasn't on, LOL. Fortunately, I shut it down in time to prevent a processor meltdown.

I am just wondering how does a CPU get so hot in less than a second I mean a 120-watt light bulb does not get that heated that fast?
Anybody got an explanation?

You are probably lucky and have a mobo that supports thermal protection. Only new ones have this and most will shut the computer down instead of running at partial speed. What mobo do you have?

AMD chips cannot survice without a Heatsink, but they *can* survive without a fan.

My mobo started beeping, thats when I figured out my mistake. I have the Epox 8kHA+.
