how long does it take for a new phone line to become ready for (Verizon) DSL?

hey i got a new place...and wanna get dsl. the new place is about 1.5 mi away from where i previously lived where i had verizon dsl. i just got a phone line hooked up last week and i've checked for dsl availability on the dell broadband sit and verizon's site...but both say i cant get Verizon dsl (only earthlink is offered, which is more expensive). however, there are other ppl in my same building who can get verizon dsl. i also asked a verizon technician once when i saw him working in the building whether dsl was available and he told me it was. the new place is also closer to the new telco, which makes it hard to believe that i cant get verizon dsl (esp. since they're my local phone provider too). is there some type of lag time associated since this is a new line?

btw if i wanted get cable internet service (i think the carrier is optimum online/cablevision)...would i have to have (and if not, pay) for basic cable? or can i do it w/o having to get the minimum of basic cable?

ya, don't go by that online availability thing. i did that think for like a 12 month period and it always came out as unavailable. but then i went ahead and ordered it and guess what, it works and not only that i get 1.5 mb/s down. the tech said i must be really close to the station to get that kind of bandwidth.

but it did take them a month or so to get my account set up.

u dont need basic cable if you do get cable internt.

just call verizon and im sure they'll hook u up

PlatinumGold,
how'd you order...if it said unavailable...via phone?

the reason why i wanna do it online is cuz if i get it via Dell's site...i get the the first month free and the next two months for 29.95 and then on top of that a 75 rebate.

so i dont need basic cable? hmmm...now i dunno if i wanna cancel my phone line (live off my cell) and get cable..

i bet if u call verizon they'll cut you the same deal

they said they could match the monthly rate...but cant provide the 75 rebate (tho w/ my last dsl service, csr gave me 2 months free cuz i told em there was a rebate); but i guess i'll probably just call verizon cuz i dont want to wait too long.

yeah i was gonna order it w/ my local service...but i knew of the dell promotion and decided to wait.

I got Verizon. In thier FAQ page they go into detail why someone a street over can't get it.
