Took my dog to the hospital today because he had an infection in his paw. They put him to sleep with a sedative, lanced the infection, and gave him a shot to come out of it. That was almost 4hrs ago and he's still acting out of it. Does it take long for them to come back to normal? Dog is 2.5yrs old 55lbs. Hospital is closed so can't call them. This is his first time under any type of sedation.

Should have been within 2 hours.
Sorry, your dog has been called for the rapture.

It can take many hours for the sedative to completely wear off.

When my dog got fixed he was loopy the rest of the day. When he woke up the following morning he was normal.

There's a ton of individual variation. Some are out of it in no time, others are a bit loopy for quite a while. If it were really simple, then someone could study to be an anesthesiologist in a couple of weeks/doctors wouldn't need a specialist. Heck, we had two llamas put under earlier this week for some minor work (fighting teeth removed, front teeth trimmed, and balls cut out) - one llama dropped like a sack of potatoes within a minute; the other had to be given two injections, and still took a while to go down. And, despite the higher dose, he recovered a lot faster than the first one.

Yup, which is why they generally warn you before putting your dog under for an operation that there is always a chance that the sedation itself could be fatal.

When your pet is scheduled to undergo a surgical procedure your first thought may be of the risks of anesthesia. This is perfectly natural – the risks of general anesthesia are usually greater than that of the surgery itself.

Our daughter's dog had some sort of growth on her belly. The daughter took the dog to the vet and the vet said the growth needed to be removed. So a few days later the daughter took the dog back to the vet and the vet sedated the dog and removed the growth. This was about 3 years ago and I don't think that dog has been right since.

Just last week I stopped at the daughter's house and talked with her for a few minutes. I was sitting in a chair and the dog came over to me and I petted the dog and scratched her ears for a couple minutes. When I stopped petting her, the dog growled at me. That dog has never growled at me until after she had that growth removed. Now the dog is temperamental as hell and has growled at me several times. She has never bitten me, but she doesn't seem to like me anymore. But the thing is, before she had that growth cut off, the dog loved me to death. I still think being sedated is what caused the dog to be goofy.

Pet ownership should be illegal and is very selfish. Instead putting the dog to sleep, like it should have been you made it suffer through an unnecessary medical procedure. Now you are concerned that it's not pleasing you quick enough.

It's just more of the same from you, isn't it?

Kill the dogs kill the owners and kill the usless breed. All forms of pet ownership should be illegal. Anyone with a Pitbull is a moron.

Life is hard and has a cycle of birth and death. Dog is just a dog an animal is not human, what has to be done has to be done. Just think of all the children in Africa that could have been immunized and their lives saved, with the money you spend on an old sick dog. It is immoral and selfish to care for a pet when humans are suffering. I feel deeply sad and sorry for you.

Oh just wow. There are so many things wrong with what you described and all of them have you in common. I don't want to say too much since it's late but if you love this “puppy” take care of it. Dogs are not TVs at BB where you just can bring them back because you decided there is something wrong with it. The dog was injured when you got it. Taking care of sick people and animals costs money you should have known what you were getting into. If the dog runs in to more health problems or destroys your furniture are you going to demand money from this woman.
Be more responsible use your head. Careless irresponsible people with a lack of imagination shouldn't have pets, and i hope you don't have children of the human kind.
You decided to take responsibility of the animal as soon as you walked out of the door

I agree cute but is it better than a child? For a fraction of the amount of money you will spend on owning this animal you could save a child's life in a third world country. Pets are a terrible idea, and to own one is very selfish and irresponsible. They are a terrible drain on earths resources and provide nothing of value in return.

Are you referring to me? Because if you are, I have a news flash for you. If you think for one second a 5 year old dog should have been "put to sleep" because of a growth on its belly, you are nuts. The dog had the surgery and is perfectly fine, physically. The only thing is, for some reason the dog doesn't like me anymore. For all I know it could be the dog doesn't like my aftershave, I don't know for sure, I just think it may have something to do with the sedative she was given to knock her out. Who knows, maybe the dog will eventually come around and we will be "buddies" again, or maybe not. But in any case, to kill a dog for no other reason than YOU don't like dogs, takes a really sick mind. Perhaps you should seek professional help.

Ignore the nutjob, he has a tendency to thread crap whenever he sees something about pets.
