How long does it take for a DNS change to take effect?

I'm referring to changing a website's name servers through your registrar. How long until those name servers are propogated through the root name servers? It's definitly not instantaneous.

Which registrar? Whenever I use NameCheap.com it takes 6-12 hours.

Usually 24 hours.

A max of 24 hours, I think.

Usually it takes a few hours for the registrar to make the change, but up to 48 hours for ISPs to pick it up...

24 to 48 hours they say but usually less than 24 hours. It all depends upon the registrar.
