Question How long does a SD card last in a Dashcam?

my 32gig sd card has been in my dash cam since before Covid.

Recently, my dashcam is sometimes gives the error msg of 'insert sd card' when i turn it on.
i turn the dashcam off/on and it solves the problem for a little while.

I just reformatted the sd card. (real format, not quick format)
took 15min.

that got me thinking is my sd card going bad from too many writes?

Depends on the conditions where you live. If it's hot or cold it lessens the durability. Considering you can get 32GB cards for under $10 just grab a couple of them and keep them in the glove compartment.

Could be. Also depends on what quality the SD card is. Some of the cheaper ones just die occasionally, for no discernible reason.

Ideally, you'd want one of the video surveillance rated cards, but those cost more. So may not be worth it. Which leads to:

That can certainly be a good solution. SD cards are cheap and cheerful. They're not reliable.

Bought one of these in 2019 and it's been used for quite a few things over the years and is installed in the car now for the android head unit I put in. I do have a small collection of SD cards though that still work that are older.

The issue with them is more likely extensive writes in a dashcam.

considering why i am using a dashcam, i'm going to put in a new sd card vs using one that i'm beginning to question it's reliability

I've had the same SD card in one of my dashcams for over 5 years now, the other was about 5 years before I upgraded both the dashcam and SD card (higher capacity, not because it was broken).

now a new problem has arisen after i formatted.

turn on dashcam, records fine for driving an hr for a few days.
then turn on dashcam, records fine but sometime in the next hr, it stopped recording.
i noticed the red light isnt blinking anymore.

yeah, going to buy a new sd card.
(all the ones i currently have are pre-covid)

I think the SD card deteriorate over time... from both writes, and the environment. I've had to pull my camera down to adjust the settings, before, and the thing was so hot, I could hardly hold it (I'm in Texas.) ...so that can't be good for longevity.

I would also check your settings... re: stopped recording. I've got a Garmin that will sometimes switch to timeout/no motion mode on it's own, and I have to reset it.

Get the Endurance Models.
They are designed for the higher heat tollerance your car sits in while parked.
They also mostly are made from MLC to handle more writes.

I am using a sandisk endurance in my Blackvue since 2018, and its still rocking strong.
