how long does a company has to keep your personal HR stuff?

just wondering, I had a special deal with my old company, it was in writing in the offer letter, and I have since lost that offer letter, do they have to have it in my personal folder in the HR department, if so for how long?
 
Strangely, this is somewhat of a repost. Someone else asked how long companies have to keep records yesterday or the day before, but I don't believe he was referring to your kind of situation.
