how long do you think I'll be set at 4GHz on Q9650?

I asked a similar question in the video form about a week or two back. Something about future-proof for two years, with a Q6600 and HD4850 crossfire.

If you're worried about processor lifespan, you don't OC in the first place. If you OC you're assuming short term gains and also assuming you'll be replacing your proc in 2-3 years.

but 4GHz should last 2 years fine assuming you're not using stock cooling... please tell me you bought something more robust for cooling, or I'm going to shake my head and laugh at you...
 
high voltage will shorten everything. If you could run high FSB at stock voltages on your motherboard life expectancy probably won't go down too much, but if you're upping the voltage to get the higher clocks I'm dead certain you're going to burn out faster than normal.

To answer that, it sounds like your computer will run F@H. Now try Prime95 Blend for 24 hours.

As to the original question, nobody can say for sure as to how long the Mobo/Chip will last. Too many factors that are unknowns as to Heat, Voltages, Run Time, QC, etc...

Op, when you take the risk of overclocking, cutting life off of the proc, you are doing a give and take. You cannot expect a perfectly accurate answer when you're overclocking. It could crap out in 6 months. You just do not know.

i am wondering IF you are planning to sell your CPU/mofo in FS/T after you are done with it in 2 years?

[apoppin makes a note never to buy your used HW; and he also regularly checks this CPU forum to see who else doesn't care what happens to their HW after they abuse it and then sell it 😛]

My 4.0 Ghz OC on my q9550s is for benchmarking only .. i move it back down when i play games and do other tasks; 90% of its up time
-there is almost no *practical* difference in frame rates between 3.8Ghz and 4.0Ghz with a GTX280 - except one's ego - in actually PLAYING most PC games

I want a good overclock that would last for 2 years and is safe. I like the Q9650 @4GHz and I may just have it at 3.6GHz till the last few months I own it or plan an upgrade.

What i am trying to say is; there is no "safe"
- only stock speeds are warrantied

However, some overclocks are more reasonable than others

the ones that are high temperatures and high voltages are unreasonable - imo - especially if you are going to sell your HW - without full disclosure

and Gaming Performance is rarely drastically - or even noticeably - improved with an extreme OC vs. a moderate one
