I see USDA has some guidelines, and nothing is over 1 year.

I have a deep freezer that im cleaning out, but I have some unopened packages of cookie dough, 15 boxes of hot dogs (leftover from an event) and a giant bag of green beans

Would probably save money on electricity just having it unplugged, but curious if i can transfer some of this stuff to my regular freezer.

It'll never be harmful, but some things may taste bad. The only way to tell is to try everything.

Several years ago my wife and I came to an agreement. If it has been in the deep freezer for more than 2 years it goes away.

I typically throw stuff away that I don't use just to reduce clutter. The idea of keeping food frozen for multiple months/years is weird to me.

I sometimes play freezer roulette, to clear out the freezer. You blind pick a thing from the freezer, and that has to be a part of your dinner. :)

I keep snus in my freezer. That would make an interesting dinner.

Couple years on my Foodsaver stuff.

Have you really frozen food for a few years and it tasted good?

We are going on 9 months on a few items I sealed in the foodsavers vacuum bags. So far everything I have tried out of the food saver has tasted good when thawed. 2 weeks ago I thawed some ribeye steaks I had frozen then sealed and and they were great on the grill.

Until I remember I put it in the freezer.

Then I check it for freezer burn.

I once moved a pack of ribs from my freezer to TWO new apartments before deciding that 4 years was probably too long to keep them around. Actually, I might still have them. They'll never get eaten, but they'll never get thrown away either.

If the food is well packaged and the freezer is working properly there won't be a whole lot of difference between stuff frozen for a year and frozen for two years. The $64K question is why a person would need to have food frozen that long. Rotate things in an out and it won't be a problem you have to face.

2 years is the longest I've tried iirc. Tasted fine. I started doing the recommended trick of boiling the bags (sealed) to evenly reheat the food and it works great, especially if you're doing something like Chinese food (our favorite Chinese place is about an hour away so we load up when we go). But yeah, meats and stuff have all held up fine. I've found having a tall upright freezer is a lot better than a chest freezer for long-term storage of foods too.

Hmmn you're either addicted to it like crack or it's really that good.

For lunch today, I microwaved and ate a packet of sausage from the freezer that had an expiration date of Aug 2012. No problems whatsoever. :hmm:
