How long do I have to pay a speeding ticket?

Got a ticket about a month ago... tried to pay it online, kept watching my credit card for the charge and it never got charged. Three weeks later I got an email saying payment was sent to the wrong court. (I followed the instructions on the county website but apparently I made a mistake or the instructions were wrong)

Other financial obligations have come up and I no longer have the cash to pay it for another 2-4 weeks. I could take money out of my investment accounts to pay it, but that would take some time also. No where on the ticket does it say how long I have to pay the ticket before any type of penalty is applied... I'm sure I could find out by calling, but I just did and waited on hold for 10 minutes. I'll call back of course, but was curious if anyone knows what the usual time frame is to pay a ticket before they get pissy.

Not to be an asshole or anything, but why in the hell are you asking us this question? Call the court. Laws vary from state to state.

Usually it'll have a court date on it in case you want to fight the ticket. Pay before that or go to court that day. It can be anywhere from 30 days to 120 depending on where you got pulled over.

It usually says right on the ticket. Different states/counties different rules. In general, 30 days before a bench warrant is issued. Have a nice day.

Welcome to warrantsville. Your ticket should have a court date on it, if you missed it get ready to go directly to jail if you get pulled over again.

to be helpful, call the county clerk and have your information ready or just go down to the courthouse.

Most jurisdictions will mail you all this information several weeks after you receive the citation. The info will have all your due dates, fine amount, and court date if you choose to contest. Are you saying that you have not yet received this?

It won't be a penalty...it'll be a warrant out for your arrest for failing to appear in court/pay the ticket. Most tickets have a court date on them, that is the date you need to have the ticket paid by, or show up at court.

Honestly, why on earth would you be asking ATOT? Freaking call the court clerk and find out the actual law.

The amount of days you have to pay off a speeding ticket is:

Speed limit - MPH over the limit.

So if the limit is 55 and you did 70 then you have 40 days to pay it off.

You don't need a drivers license to drive, you only need one to get caught.

In Virginia, you have until the court date to pay the fine. This date should be on your ticket.
After the court date, you would owe the fine and court costs. There would then be a short grace period to pay the new total, before penalties and interest and a license suspension and/or warrants were issued.

If the court allows credit card payments, you would definitely want to do that even with any convenience fees they might charge.

Finally got through to someone at the court. The ticket is now late, so it's $150 instead of $120. She said no more late charges will be applied as long as I mail it in within the next 3 weeks. Now I just need to find a place that will let me charge a money order to a credit card...
