I bought a 50 inch Samsung 2 years ago(this June) and it is still working great, how much more should I expect out of it?

Doesnt the menu tell you something about how much life is left on the bulb? Or is that only for DLP projectors?

My Sammy 50" DLP still has the original bulb. It's over 4 years old now. Still looks great.

Of course I'm sure it's going to blow right after I click the "reply" button, though.

edit: I think DLP bulb life is one of those "theoretical" problems that, "on paper", is a great way to sell people another type of TV.

It's like car geeks sitting around trying to figure out what is the best car in its class and coming down to the 0-60 times, and the top two are like .1 second apart. An irrelevant difference.

Just something for TV geeks to argue over, just like burn-in on plasmas. I've seen countless posters here and there say "but DLP's eat bulbs, and bulbs are expensive, that sucks".

In reality, DLP's do not eat bulbs very often. I know many, many people with DLP's, and nobody has had to replace a bulb yet. Some folks certainly have, but it's not a "real" concern to me.

And probably NOBODY'S home DLP has as many hours on it as mine.....most days it stays on all day long, looping kids movies. Then whatever I watch at night. Or games.

My Sammy also hits the 2 year mark next month. I believe the bulbs are rated for 5000 hours. You can go into the service menu, and it will tell you how many hours you've used so far. If you decide to do it, take care! You can ruin your tv if you mess with the wrong settings.

How many backup lamps do you guys have?

I wonder when and if replacement bulb scarcity will actually hit.

I don't have any backup, as I don't anticipate any shortage. Why do you feel there will be?

Dude, if my bulb goes out, I'll just order one and replace it when it gets here. I don't need TV so badly that I have to have a replacement bulb ready to go.

But, if you're already at 4 years, with the original bulb likely to go in the next 6 months, why not order one now. It'll cost you the same as it would in 6 months but you simply save yourself the few day wait.

We're at 3625 hours on our original samsung bulb now. We should also make it at least 4 years, or close to it. I figure $175 for a bulb every 3-4 years isn't bad at all.

Just checked, the service menu says my lamp life is at 12795. Surely that doesn't mean 12000hrs, does it?

Oh, and info I've found says they should last 5-8000 hours.

Yeah, I checked it again and that's what it says. Definitely the original bulb. The TV's never been serviced at all.
I'll take a pic of the service menu and you or someone else can tell me if I'm reading it right.

Edit: Here's a pic of the menu

I've probably jinxed the TV to no end now.

That seems like a lot of hours, but after thinking about it, it's legit.

That TV is on pretty much all day, every day, and then most of the night. Especially for the first 3 years of its life. It loops kid's movies during the day, and games or whatever I'm watching at night. I generally just leave it on all the time, like if I get up and decide to go surf the 'net for awhile, as I feel that is easier on it than constantly turning it on and off. Obviously I am right in that thought. ;)

That is simply amazing. I wonder if it is a record. I certainly don't deny it legitimacy. That service menu looks like mine and I don't know what else that number would be referring to. Probably matches up with your estimated total hours as well. Samsung++

And you're right for leaving it on rather than turning it on and off a lot. We do the same. Turn it on and off only one time a day.

I did some googling and found some dude on a Corvette forum, of all things, who said he had 12k+ on his Sammy, too.

Found another link that had reports of 18, 17 and 16k on other Sammys, so I guess mine's not a record. :(

Someone on AVS forum told me there's no way the bulb at this point can even be close to as bright as it used to be.

But the TV still looks great to me. It might not look as good as when new, but without a new one beside it to compare, it's hard to tell.

I was gonna ask if you had re-calibrated or readjusted the brightness settings (or others as well).

DLP bulb life expectency is directly correlated to how you use/handle your TV.

Constant on/offs and unexpected power outages where the bulb cooling fan goes out without cooling down the bulb, will prematurely kill bulbs faster.
