Mine is about five years old and so far so good. How long do they usually last? When they finally break, what usually goes wrong?

My 19" Taxan monitor only lasted 5 years (although it was used heavily) and went out with a bang and a puff of smoke!!! My other CRT monitors are over 6 years old and going strong. I have seen much older monitors still going fine. My experience is that CRT monitors are very reliable and last for years. The oldest CRT monitor I have seen going is on an IBM PS1 (1986 - 17yrs old). Still going strong and PC with a 8Mhz 8088 Processor is still being used for accounts!

In time screen quality will decline slightly and you may notice a wobble in the display or a ghosting down one side of the screen. This is a clear indication that its time to consider a replacement. Mind you, you might get a good few years out of it yet.

Long live the humble CRT monitor - the reliable workhorse of the IT Industry! (now that should stir up a few posts!!!)

i've had very bad experiences with viewsonic.

mine went out after warranty(3years) and a few months. my mom experienced the same timeframe/failure, as did my friend. 3 different models from 3 different years. whereas my generic is still going strong after 4+ years. what gives?

i know this cant be the norm or viewsonic wouldnt still be in business. too strange.

My 4 year old Viewsonic is going strong still on my daughter's computer and my new Viewsonic is 18 months old, no problem.

I have 3 Dell refurb'd sony's that are all doing well over the past year as well.

My 8 year old Daytek worked fine and was sold off.
I shop at a recycling place that has literally pallets of old monitors from businesses, all for sale and working, most over 5 years old.
