How long do companies have to process a credit card transaction?

So I made a fairly large purchase ($500+) online on Feb 1. I've long since received the items that I ordered but the charge has never hit my credit card. Is there some kind of time limit on how long they can wait to process the charge?

I've wondered the same thing. I usually pay my cards before they report. Chase held a large purchase for a week and then reported it before actually posting it on my account so I could pay it. Yeah, I was pissed.
