How long do .com domains stay in redemption period?

I seem to remember that it's 40 days after the domain expires for .com domains in the US, but I've been waiting for a certain domain for 3 months now, and it's still in redemption period. 😕

doesn't it depend who has it ? I thought the companies set their own rules since they will keep it themselves.
