That's what I see from streets&trips, let us know if there really is construction around Riddle.

I took I5 a year and a half ago. Left Canyon Park around 6pm on a Friday, stayed the night in Bend, OR (arriving at midnight or so), leaving at 9am and making it to LA at 7pm.

Of course (eheh) YMMV. :p

I think Yahoo map is smoking crack. I just check the map...and it looks like I-5 is indeed the quickest way around Portland area. So anyone took the similar trip before? How long did it really take?

i believe I-5 goes THRU portland and I 205 goes AROUND portland.

so, choose your ours carefully. if you hit portland near rush hour, mb better to go around.

I-5 is the quickest way. Not the most scenic route, but gets you there the fastest. I average Vancover from Oakland in about 13-15 hours, so add another 6 hours.

I think I should make a stop in Oregon as well...but really don't know any city that has decent hotel along I-5 in Oregon...I can book a decent hotel in San Francisco...but god, I hate SF.

Yeah, that was the benefit for us -- going south, we hit Portland at like 9pm and coming back, at 4 or 5am.

Going to SF will add lots of unnecessary Bay Area traffic. Just rent a room in Stockton. :p

SF is a little off the path too, isn't it? Bend was fine for us, we stayed at the Best Western there and it was okay for 7 or 8 hours of sleep and a free OJ in the morning.

I would echo the statement about scenery too -- some of it is pretty, but the bulk of the trip is flat farmland (like around Modesto). I hear Highway 101 is nice, but it takes longer.

im sure you can find a hotel along the interstate in oregon.

wont be the ritz or anything, but jeez its just a bed for 6-8 hours.

and if youre that rich and have qualms about lowering yourself to sleeping in a comfort inn, motel 6 or whatever, why not just fly?

I-5 goes directly through central Portland. I-205 bypasses around the suburban east side, starting in Salmon Creek, WA in the north and re-connecting with I-5 in Tualatin, OR. I-205 is only a few miles (about 5 or so I would say) longer than the comparable stretch of I-5. If you hit Portland at rush hour, you will encounter traffic on either, but the 205 traffic should be lighter.
I think Yahoo recommends Salem as the 205 southbound signs say "Salem", but Salem, the capitol of Oregon, is still 37 miles south on I-5 after it re-connects with the 205.
The total drive will probably take about 20 hours. In clear traffic, it takes roughly 3 hours to get from Seattle to Portland, and then another 8 hours from Portland to Sacramento.

edit: Bend would also be off the path for a hotel stay in Oregon, as it is on US 97 east of the Cascades and he should take I-5 west of the Cascades. I recommend staying in Medford or Ashland in Southern Oregon very close to the CA border. That's about 7-8 hours south of Seattle. Either that, or cross 2 more hours into CA and stop in Redding.

Thats nothing. I've driven from Oakland to Nova Scotia in under 60 hours straight, and from some place in New Jersey to Oakland in 4 days (took the scenic route). I think I was a trucker in another life. Anyways, its a good time to be introspective.

20 hours is how long it took me, minus the hour it took me to get onto I5 in LA traffic. It's a pretty damn boring drive, especially once you get into california.

Yeah, driving from Seattle to LA isn't that bad -- the time we drove there, we continued on from LA to Phoenix that night, then went to Flagstaff the next day, stayed the night and drove on to Vegas the next day (where we stayed 3 nights) before driving straight through from Vegas back to Seattle.

I think that's the best vacation I've ever been on. ;)

Well, I will be the only person in the car, so it's not like I can sleep and let other people take over for me.

Yeah, it's nice to switch drivers. On the way down, we switched a bit. Coming back, I drove all but about 3 hours (right after I got a ticket in BFE, Nevada, heh).

The thing that worries me the most is the mountain road between Oregon and California. I just hope it won't be fogged or snowing....or that would suck.

Yeah, it was foggy through the mountains in Oregon on our trip (which was in March of '03). No idea what the road conditions are like this time of year, tho.

I'm always the only driver cause no one wants to take the long trips. I usually just pull into a rest area (no gay jokes) and crash for and hour or two and keep going. Just be ssure to pull over every now and then to break up the monotony. Apparently you can self hipnotize yourself on long drives.
