Last night my wife and I were on our way to grab a coffee at Panera when we decided to stop at the local Walmart market to pick up a few things. I usually avoid Walmart for my own personal reasons but this market is actually quite a nice store, small and well-maintained ... so we stopped in, forgetting that it was still a Walmart. We would live (or nearly die) to regret this decision.

After about 10 minutes and picking up five-or-so items we proceed to the checkout. It is at this point when we encountered the absolute worst smell (even worse then road-kill) that we have ever smelled. Apparently an older "gentleman" standing about five feet away never learned common courtesy ... or how to use soap and water. He was so ripe ... he must not have bathed in at least 2 weeks. My wife and I start wincing in pain ... we grab our cart and move a few isles down. Hoping that our cashier will hurry we nudge her on ... hoping beyond all hope to avoid the "stench man" as we called him. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Just as we paid for our stuff the guy walks by ... causing the cashier to wince in pain.

I guess I had hoped that the quality of clientele at the local Walmart market was a little better then that at the Walmart Superstores ... boy, was I wrong. Yet anotheer reason to avoid Walmart.

Sounds more like you should avoid smelly people. What does this have to do with Walmart?

I think you should avoid a lot more places. The "stench man" could be anywhere. I have reason to believe that he's hiding in your pants right now.

Lesson #1: Walmart always has had the dregs of society. If you want to see what the bottom of the barrel as far as human evolution is concerned, you'll find it in your neighborhood Walmart.

Lesson #2: Don't expect any form of civilized human beings in the store. As witnessed by the Black Friday stampede (although it could have happened anywhere, Walmart didn't do anything to control the crowd).

Lesson #3: Walmart will be the one store in any town where you can fear for your life (even in a town where crime rate is next to nothing).

Lesson 1 - My local walmart has some nice people in it. It's a very nice store that is very well maintained and you do see middle/upper class people in there.

Lesson 2 - I did BF last year at Walmart and it was very orderly. Not bad at all. The employees tried to only let in so many people at a time and tried to maintain order as best as possible.

Lesson 3 - Again, my local Walmart does not fit your stereotype. I definitely do not fear for my life there.

It is one thing to look down on criminals. Quite another to look down on those less fortunate than yourself. The man could have been homeless. I know, I know, we all see these people buying cookies and beer with their stamps when they are not supposed to, but that doesn't mean they all do. This is a case where being a cynic makes us callous towards others.

This isn't a feel guilty post, but consider a few things

1) You didn't choose where you were born
2) You didn't choose who your parents were

It could very well be you in that position and for that you should be thankful! I know I am. Also, maybe suggest to the man kindly that he take a shower if possible, then maybe you will find more about his story.

First time in OT, so I suppose I might get crucified with this post.

yeah all walmart shoppers should just go and die in a corner somewhere in their filth.
we should step on their necks with righteous conviction.

I never realized the separation between middle and lower class until I went to a grocery store in the lower class section of town. Nomally I never travel to that side of town simply because there is no reason to. But a few weeks ago I was visiting a friend with a cold and went to the local store to buy him soup.

The first thing I noticed is that My car was at least 5 - 7 years newer then everyone else in the parking lot. Once in the store I was shocked at how small the isles were. I mean there was almost no room to move. On top of that everyone smelled of being unwashed and cigarette smoke. I finally found what I needed and checked out. When I got to the parking lot I found a cart slamed into the side of my 2009 corolla. I suspect it was the van I parked next to which was gone. They probably had like 5 kids and didn't have time to put the car away and figured out of sight was out of mind.

Luckily my insurance covered removing the scratch and dent. It was at that moment when my wife went on a tirade about how disrespectful and smelly poor people are that I realized just how stuck up we really are.

I wish I wasn't such a failure, that I do.

I'm sorry, but you're nowhere near important or intelligent enough to fix my post, Sally.

Sounds like you've never taken public transit. I've been trapped on full, packed to the rims, streetcars before with nowhere to run. All I remember is making eye contact with other non-stinky passengers, and sharing our pain.

Can you say elitist?

Can you say pussy?

Now say it altogether... Elitist pussy.

Very good.

You must live a sheltered life. And a douchey one at that.

A new Super Walmart opened in Raleigh near me about 3-4 months ago. It's a pleasant place to shop. It's got that "big warehouse" feel to it and it's always clean. The clientele seems to be a nice mix of middle and low-class shoppers, and I don't see the problem with that.

Pluses
1) Less than 5 minutes from my house
2) Prices on grocery items undercut the grocery stores that I used to shop at by a fair margin (Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods)
3) Clean stores
4) Ample parking
5) Wide aisles
6) I'm usually in and out of the store in less than 10 minutes (less if I only need a few things)

Minuses
1) No self checkout
2) 25 registers -- normally only half of those are open (but this is typical of just about any store).
3) Cashiers COULD at least smile or act like they want to be there -- but then again, I don't go to Walmart to make friends, I go there for value
4) Their prices on beef/pork/chicken is SKY HIGH compared to grocery stores -- I still haven't figured that one out -- so I still get my meat from usually Harris Teeter.

Kind of incongruous with their policies on solicitation for fund raisers. Walmart will let pretty much any group that signs up in advance raise money outside their stores (sorry if I don't want to help send your kid's softball team on a vacation in Florida; at least the Girl Scouts have good cookies). Target doesn't let anyone solicit outside their stores, even charities (but they do donate a higher percentage of their profits to charity than any other major company, by a pretty big margin). So at Walmart you can pester people to give you money on their way in or out, but you can't give them money to spend at Walmart.

As long as you're shopping there it won't be getting better.
