I know a guy who did it for 5+ minutes, but he suffered brain damage afterwards...

most people can't hold their breath for more than 2 minutes or so with out special training. normally 4 minutes without oxygen is enough to cause brain damage.

If I hyperventilate before hand I can do about 2 and a half minutes.

I can't hold it too long. It was funny ... it was such BS in Into The Blue how paul walker could hold his breath for like 5 minutes, all while using energy and swimming into the deep waters. my GF and I got a kick out of that the other day.

just saw the movie, and yea that was BS, especially when they go down about 50-75 feet

ya know you are able to hold your breath less and less the farther down you go

Yah the pressure gets to your lungs I believe, right?

but yea that was laughable. I loved the scenery in that movie though (alba and the underwater shots). I can't hold my breath long at all cause I have asthma.

Actually, trained free divers can hold their breath for well over 5 minutes.
Free-divers use fins that are twice as long as normal scuba fins. This allows them to use very little energy while swimming.

My best time was 3 minutes 40 seconds.
The last time I timed myself (1 year ago) I only managed 2 minutes 55 seconds.

There are 2 people I met in my life w/ significant stories about this..........

The first I experienced.......the other I wasn't there for.

First was a friend of my mother's. She rented this house w/ a guest house behind it that had a huuuuuge pool in between. We would play "Marco Polo" and the guy who lived in the guest house was just FREAKISH!!! I swear he'd hold his breath for 3 minutes or so. It was scary to say the least. I tried to go to the bottom and "hide out" w/ him once. I lasted about a 1.5 minutes and came up. He was still down there AT LEAST another minute.

Second was a buddy of mine who went to be an "Army Ranger"!!! Well, after rigorous training anyway, he also had to completely a dive test which was something like......(forgive me)........100ft (???) I can't remember exactly.

Anyway...........he burst both of his ear drums. He never completed the test and did not become a Ranger. Nothing wrong w/ holding his breath. He could hold it for 2:30 consistently........(also scary to me).

Heck, anybody remember the smoker on "Fear FActor" who made it thru the water-tube stunt at something like 2:3x ????. That was pretty sick, too!!
