Its unlocked, week 28. Vio is max. Busspeed = 100. I have a modified A7V (1.01) with bios 1004c. The max. voltage the bord can supply is now 2.31v (bios). When stressed, te CPU becomes 73 degrees. My cooler is a ALPHA PAL6035 MFC (23 CFM fan) with artic silver. On the Via-chipset I added artic plus a fan. Also I used artic and a smaal coolingblock on the IC above the dipswithes.

My goal was to achieve 1000Mhz. I reached this by adding extra resistors and upping the voltage to max 2.33. WindowsME boots @2.33 (not @ 2.31, BSOD), stressed it becomes 76 degrees. At 1000mhz it does not run stable, in 3dmark the program runs, but after a while it just drops back to windows (In the "normal" 2D enviroment, its runs fine, but I don't spend a lot of time there ;> ). So 1000Mhz isn't stable. 950 @2.26v is. It has been running smoothly for a couple of days now.
My temp-sensor is located against the core, so the temps are valid (one remark: the Asus sensor always add's 7.5 degrees to the meausurement, try holding in under your armpit, I should be dead with a temperture of 44,5 degrees 🙂 )

Concluding: Mine A7V is perfect for overclokking, accept my Duron doesn't want to. At the standerd voltage (1.85v) it runs max. 850 stable.

Question 1: I am convinced that the voltage is the limiting factor. But I STILL want to reach the 1000Mhz. To do this, it wil be nessecary to up the voltage to 2.35 or 37. The temp at this speed and voltage will probably become 80 degrees. What lifespan do you give this Duron? (if it holds out for 6 months I'm happy)

Question 2: Are the more people who have used the volage mod, and have gone even higer?

Question 3: Hints to reduce voltage and/or temp are always welcome

tomshardware.com says the highest safe voltage for the duron/tbird is 2.11 volts, so hope you have a retail chip.

I have my Duron 600@954 MHz at 2.0 volts. Won't do 1000 MHz all the way (Prime95 gives problems).

I'm at 44 degrees C right now.
 
I have seen some hardcore overclockers in here, but you tops them all man.😛 Mind were doing 950MHz@1.85V 52C under full load, but I decide to back down to 900MHz@1.70V 47C under full load. I sleep better at night. Good luck joining the 1GHz club dude.
 
But what kills a processor?
(keeping in mind that a Duron can operate at a max temp of 90 degrees (AMD pdf-file specifications), and al (mine at least) the A7V temp meausurements are 7.5 degrees lower than displayed.

Is it the high temp or to much voltage?

(for example is set the duron to 600 with 2.2V, temp reaches 48) in other words: high voltage but not to hot, will it die?

What I am trying to say is: There is a connection between the temp and the voltage, but if the temp remains below the specified value (90), but voltage is much higher, wil the processor die?
(in other words, the cooling is sufficient to remove the heat produced by the high voltage)
 
2.26 is just plain nuts. Maybe 2.05 or 2.1 or something like that max.

I don't have a Duron but have a Celeron II. I just went from 920 at 1.9 to 880 at 1.8, after running two months with no problems at the higher speed. Even though I have an Alpha as well, 1.9 really is too high for me since it's of marginal benefit, and because at that bus speed the drives can get stressed out (although since your setup is unlocked, bus speed ain't a problem for you so that doesn't apply here).

If I were you, if I could run around 2-ish V at 900, I'd be happy, but then again, I'd wanna keep my CPU for more than 6 months (and wouldn't want it to die in the middle of a defrag or something).

By the way, BOTH voltage and heat destroy a chip, but a sustained high voltage is worse.
 
ok dude...it wont burst like any second, but AMD says 90c temp for it's cpu's because that's how much it could handle, NOT IN REAL WORLD SITUATIONS! ok, it will not goto 90 degrees, it will fry b4 than. anything above 60 is WAY over. even 50 is CRAZY!
they say 90, because that's what it should go to theoritically, and in a lab, with no mobo, no video card, no sound card, just straight power on the cpu. i forgot where i read the article but it's not really gonna hit 90.

Why not just try with a peltier and/or waterblock? If you're willing to mod the motherboard for a higher voltage, then I would imagine you have no aversion to extreme cooling methods. That would certainly keep you from frying the CPU at least.
 
actually, just to make a quick correction, the 700's aren't really any more likely to get to a gig than a 600...theyt are more or less all the same right now. However, there is the rumor of a new stepping released which may be better at getting to the magic number.

I have two 600's, one runs at 950 (1.8) and one at 1050(1.85)....
No quarantee that a 700 runs 1Gig... I have tried several of them...

And I paid $56 for the th 600's
