How long can I run without a cooling fan?

Well, my new cpu, motherboard and video card should be arriving today from newegg. Unfortunately, the cooling fan I ordered, and a few other items, don't show up until Friday. I'd like to be able to install the mobo, the cpu, vid card, ram and test them all to see if at least these components are working correctly. Can I at least run the system briefly without fearing for the safety of my cpu? Would it be best to just be patient and wait till Friday? It'd be nice to have these major components tested, so if any are non-functional, I can get them replaced quicker.

you may want to wait, it wont take long for it to over heat

all depends on the heatsink so no telling exactly how long, but with no heatsink at all a tbird/duron will overheat and be damaged in less then 10 seconds

we talking no heatsink either on the CPU? one time after cleaning my alphapep66 on my coppermine i didnt get it on all the way afterwards, was just barely making contact, like one corner.. thing would crash in seconds even at default speed.

Are you talking no heatsink/fan? Or a heatsink without a fan?

If you REALLY can't wait until Friday, you could run up and spend $10 on a generic hs/fan.

But I wouldn't bother trying to run it sans hs/fan.

Getting an OEM Tbird 1 gig. Looks like from the advise here, I won't be powering it up tonight. I was just hoping to turn it on for a few seconds, test the new hardware briefly, but it looks like it won't be worth risking $145.

If you do a search here you will find so many people whinning that there CPU was burned out after just a few seconds of trying this...DON'T DO IT, YOUR ASKING FOR TROUBLE !

Would you run your car without water in the radiator ? Just use common sense.

i would deffinately wait because when i built my Athlon 700 (original K7 slot A), i thought, yeah, i want to try it out. I had no HSF because it was on order and i could'nt wait. So i poweed up and stated to install Windows. Abbout 5 mins later i could smell something funny and i felt the CPU - it was so hot it nearly burnt my fingers! Luckily, the smell was just 'the new smell of the components' warming up, but any longer and it would have cost me alot.

Don't risk it. Wait. Otherwise you'll be pissed.

heh well if you decide to go through with it you might as well put some hamburger meat on that cpu, so something good will come from it.. hm.. i wonder how well a tbird would be for a grill?.. guess you'd have to use like A1 sauce to mask the electrical burn smell.. well have phun..

Well after a ton of work with some fairly major mods Leo V got his TBird 1100 @ 1066 to run with a heat sink only (ducted to the power supply fan for airflow).

But to run a TBird heatsinkless would be lunacy.

Under normal circumstances running with heatsink, but no fan would be quite crazy. But no Heatsink and no fun is just plain dumb.

Don't do it man!

What kind of mobo is it? Some mobo's require a fan to be on the FAN1 power pins before the board will even start up. It's a safety feature to prevent jackasses from frying their CPU. This is especially important with AMD chips because, as yet, there is no integrated thermistor. I would just wait if I were you. Spend the time learning more about the components you have already aquired, and develop a plan for how you're going to start this baby up!

So, just what are you trying to say?

It's an Iwill KK266 mobo. I'm not sure if it requires the fan to be plugged in to power up. I know the Abit I almost bought did.

I've got things pretty well planned out already. Just the basic equipment first, make sure everything is working okay. Get the latest, greatest bios installed. Then work on Installing Windows, then the other components. When everything is working really, really well, Then comes the overclocking!

Again, my reason for wanting to turn it on, sans fan, was just to make sure that the equipment I'm getting today is working correctly. I was just going to power it up, let the memory count up, then pull the plug. I'm not going to do this now.

Depening on how fast you can run, the ambient temperature, humidity and your own physiology, you could run many miles before you would need a cooling fan. In fact you may need water and/or food before you need a cooling fan.

In the case of your cpu, I, as others suggested, would wait untill you get your cpu cooling fan.
