How long can I run RTM before I have to purchase/activate it?

Its all in the thread title. Since it will be available on technet next month, does that mean that I can buy it online along with the download? Will a unactivated 7 RTM install be functionally crippled in anyway?

Thanks

If you can get it on MS Technet, then you must be a subscriber. That being the case, you have already bought it. Just get your key to go with it.

With 3 rearms, you can go a max of 120 days unactivated; you have full functionality during that time.

err what? Your saying I get the license for free if I have a technet subscription? Well the subscription isn't mine but a friend's. But if you're goin to get an OS for free I'm gonna get a subs. right away!

I guess you don't understand what a subscription is. You pay a yearly fee. $350 the first year and $250 a year thereafter. But - that pays for just about any MS software that there is, and you get legit keys for all - and you can install each package on up to 10 machines. It is designed for IT pros, but is very useful for dedicated users. It is not legit for you to use another's subscription.

Anybody know what happens when you go into "Notification Mode" with Vista or Server 2008? Microsoft removed the "Reduced Functionality Mode" from Vista SP1 and never included it in Server 2008". Anybody know what happens?

Hello,

running this command:
slmgr -xpr

on my windows server 2008 standard x64 edition server results in this
message: Windows in in notification mode

I installed about 6 months ago with a KMS key but never activated...

1. what is notification mode?
2. is it part of RFM? If so what has been disabled?

I have not noticed any features missing. I am not forced to log off after an
hour etc... This is basically a testing server that is running ADDS,
DHCP/DNS, and WDS (and a couple file shares), I had not activated because I
expected to wipe out and setup this server several times.

any input would be appreciated, I have not updated myself on server 2k8 much
yet, and just heard about RFM today which is why I am now inquiring.

================================

Hello James,
Notification replaces RFM mode.
RFM mode was removed from Windows Vista in SP1 and is not in Windows Server
2008.
Rather than go into RFM mode, you now go into Notification mode if your
machines goes OOG ( Out of Grace(expire the activation grace period)) or
OOT ( Out of Tolerance(hardware changes that affect activation)).
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
