How long between rebuilds?

How long do you guys usually go between reformatting & installing the O/S?

I've gone since September of 2002... which has got to be some sort of record, considering I've upgraded twice since then, and I've never gone longer than 6 weeks prior to this, lol...

anyway, just looking to see how much of an anomaly I am in the world of people who actual do something to their computers... 🙂

Every two months. Needed or not, just like my shower.

i usually end up formatting every 3-6 months, depending on what upgrades im doing and how long the system has gone without a clean sweep. i install so much stuff sometimes just from looking around that its better overall to format and start from scratch

It's been more than 1 year since I last formatted. Thanks to win2k. With Win98SE, I had to format like once every month. LOL

Not often enough on my home machines. Date on this install is January. But at school I'm obsessive about the images - I'm always either building or rebuilding one image or another, and machines get reimaged every semester (But the image build machines get reimaged on a near weekly basis, whether it's to test a new image or to clean things up so I can build a new version.

Everytime I have significant hardware changes or the OS just becomes too cluttered.
Right now, my laptop is on a Win2k install that was done in June, and the desktop is WinXP that was installed in January. Win2k and XP have helped reduce the frequency of reinstallation, but I still do it once a year at least.

I used to do it during winter and summer vacation when I was in school. Now that I'm out of school, I'm not sure when I'll format. 😕

windows every 6-12 months. linux only when i feel like switching distros. got a buddy with the same debian install for almost 4 years.

I hate reformats, I have to reinstall stuff and do new settings and all the junk. blah, I say! I don't care if my registry is 500mb! 🙂

well, it's nice to know I'm not a complete anomoly... 🙂

I definitely love XP... best version of Windows (2K EXCLUDED) I've ever used... definitely the best for home use...

At any rate, I've not rebuilt in forever... I defragged for the first time since 9/28/2002 today, now the computer is WAY FASTER... I was darn near 80% fragged (ouch!)

But all is well again, and I think I might leave this 15GB in here when I start my new system next month, and I'll still use the 4.3GB partition for XP (backup LAN party use) and I'll use the 9.x GB for Mandrake... 😉

my hardware usualy gets changed around to the point that I have to resinstall about every 3-4 months.

I tend to get alot of "OMG WHAT IF?" ideas that end up in me sitting staring at a os install screen with the computer exactly as it was BEFORE my idea.

FYI...I have my 2000 server and XP pro serial keys memorized.

fckgw - .....dont get me started 🙂

I used to format every couple of weeks. I probably did my last format a few months before Summer started. I only format if I need to.

I upgrade OS every 6-12 months. I format only when I have to or it is recommended based on major OS changes. The switch from a.out to ELF was one of those times.

XP, 15 months plus now.
FreeBSD, did a build due to HD failure this week. I have never reformatted or reinstalled on the same disk, unless I kluged the initial install badly. It has been a learning process😛

I just formatted and reinstalled Win2K here a few weeks ago. Had to.. I was printing something while watching tv (through an old Hauppage WinTV card) and it locked up. Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing, and on a power cycle the OS couldn't find some file it needed to boot. So I installed w/o a format, moved any data on the C drive that I needed to save, and formatted and installed again.

The single thing I absolutely HATE the most above all is having to reboot a gazillion times after applying security updates. Why why why why why???

Running a WinXP installation from July last year...it?s still going strong so I have no intention of formatting just for the sake of it.

I think a regular schedule of AV checks, disk defrags, adware scans and applying the latest patches will keep a WinXP install good for years.
