I love the holidays... family, friends... more family, more family....

How long can you hang out with all the family before you need a breather? Indefinitely, a day, a few hours?

Hi!
<hugs, handshakes>
Well, let's take the dog for a walk.
The dog died fifteen years ago.
Oh, well, it's been fun!
We haven't eaten yet.
Er, right.

I was annoyed before they got here. Then they arrived, and brought along people who weren't even invited. I lasted about 45 minutes, and then abandoned the wife and went upstairs to sleep. It was either that or everyone was going to get acetone thrown in their face and kicked out in the snow.

Family gatherings make paperclips AAAAANNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYY!

I used to get like this till I just started shooting about 5 shots of Crown before it all starts. Now I can Handle them all, even my MIL and a couple worthless siblings I have.

If you want to have some fun, support the worst political candidate you can think of.

That Sarah Palin really calls it as it is. She should be president. <say some stuff about how about abortion doctors should be tortured and how black students ruin it for the white students>

You know your family is fucked up when you say shit like that and they all start agreeing with you.

About a week. My family is rather well behaved. But by now I've just about had it.

Immediate family I'm good for quite awhile (Going to my folks, siblings).

Extended family? Depends but it ranges from negative, I'm already batshit crazy just from the prospect of meeting them, to maybe a day or two.

fortunately my inlaws are decent folks, my side of thefamily is small, so holidays aren't bad at all. only real problem is it's like 20 people in a smallish house.

My dad has a wonderful habit of not telling me someone is coming to visit until they're inside the house and he calls me down from my room to come say "wassup". The moment I hear him open the door and a new voice ring through the house my mood plummets.

When they're introduced that way, about .1 milliseconds.

If I know they are coming before hand, I don't care. I haven't seen the bulk of my extended family since I was 7, so they don't expect me to remember them and spend more time talking with my parents.

Congrats ATOT. The basement dwelling, socially challenged, self absorbed stereotype being displayed is sure to be comforting to those who avoid change. :)

A few days....though I have to find space away throughout the day. I love 'em, but constant interaction with my brother and sister would drive me crazy in a matter of hours.

What's your suggestion? Do we listen to uncle dave's story about how his old water heater was only 3343245 BTU but his new one is 3463634 and it allows him to jerk off without running out of hot water? Hear stories about someone we've never heard of getting honors in grade 1?

There was one year where I had to explain what the constant "e" means. My middle aged aunt just found out that biweekly compounding interest is worse than monthly compounding interest and that your effective interest rate is infinity if you continuously compound the interest oh mah gawd.
(the constant "e" is your effective interest rate multiplier if you have infinitely small compound periods happening an infinite number of times, not infinity)

I live with my father and mother so them, indefinitely. The extended family? 4 hours? Seriously while we are always nice around each other our world views could not be more different for the most part. That and there are internal family conflicts over money and politics that are always close to the surface and create lots of background tension. Lots of loaded comments being made that seem normal from the outside but internally we have to node our heads and smile while gritting out teeth. Lots of bragging about their children or their recent accomplishments while making snide comments about this or that in your families life.

My mood around anything other than my immediate family kind of plummets. It's mostly how similar everyone is. If there is an argument over a topic everyone in my family pretty much resorts to beating the other into submission by over-elaborating, blah-blah-blah-blah. I do it too though. To regular non-family people they are like oh sweet jesus I just don't care.

But when the family gets together it can be everyone using the same humor/small talk/arguement styles and it makes my brain hurt.

I went to my brothers house who had said only a few people would be there. Turned out its was almost 30. Our family, her family, their friends, cousins, it was nightmarish . I retreated to a quiet corner . All the camera flashes going off made it seem more like a club with strobe lights than Christmas . My dad, almost 80 can't hear or see good, kept asking me if it was storming outside, he thought the flashes were lightning :)

The very last Christmas I spent with any of my extended family was about 14-15 years ago, while my Dad was still alive.

Sitting there at Christmas dinner, we had to hear "nigggers" discussed. I'm 1/4 Irish, most of my cousins are 3/4 Irish and many cling to that primitive racism that simply does not go down well with me.

It's Christmas, give your stupid and ugly hate a rest, fer, well, Chrisssakes!

My Dad was also deeply upset and disgusted. And no, neither of us said anything, we both knew better than to argue with Irishmen. :awe:
