How long do you think before we see 3D technology like they have in Star Trek with the holodeck? Where things have real feel to them, and it is immersive.

I was hoping in my life time.

Id say, based on current tech, at least a couple hundred years. A holodeck, as Im sure you know OP, is not just a simple 3D rendering, but a whole interactive experience, with touch, smell, sentient beings all around...

I could see the 3D part coming sooner, but to be truly interactive with "real" rendered objects and people/animals...we wouldnt even know where to being with something like that...

I'm pretty sure there was only one sentient being in the holodeckk in all seasonsof stng, and that was the cause of a freak supergenious

Well they didn't have it in star trek but had it in the next generation.

When do these take place?

Well, I guess sentient was the wrong word...the "extras" are still completely aware of whats going on around them and respond realistically to everything thats happening. I highly doubt that, unless programmed to do nothing, you could walk up to one of the A.I. females and rape her without all the other A.I.'s around you not jumping your ass or at the very least pulling you off of her while she lies there crying...a little graphic I guess, but proves my point none the less :p

I would like to think it would be sometime in my lifetime, however there are some very important technologies that would have to be matured for it to come to fruition.

AFAIK we 'have' the available technologies to recreate almost every part of the experience, but it will be a huge accomplishment to intrigrate them into a convincing and safe environment.

For instance if we were to create a field of photons contained in a 'force field' we would be subjected to some pretty wicked radiation, with our current methodology.

I dont know for sure, but I think they are set pretty far apart...I think that between the original Star Trek and TNG there were something like 3 Enterprises...so I would say...maybe 200 years or so? Roughly.

I think they are only about 100 years apart.
